This book appealed to me because it offered a long and detailed history of Japan. It really jumped into the History and I liked that we had a good time span that stretched from the end of WWII to a more recent year, 2010. I am working on a project that describes the Sexualization of Young Girls in the Idol; industry in Japan, and this book was able to give a decent history of the mindset of the Japanese, and just generally explained what was in the minds of the Japanese during different intervals of time. The description of the book was detailed, and told me exactly what I had to look forward to while reading this book. This site included the detailed description so I did not need to look elsewhere to see if this was the book that could help me with my project. The book was well written and was a smooth read. I did not need to look elsewhere for information since this book had what I needed, back history. If you are looking for a good, detailed, and interesting book that talks about the drastic transformation that overtook Japan after WWII, this is definitely the one that you should get!

This is a practical, well-researched and thoughtful guide to making better fashion products -- from the impacts of raw material selection, to the variety of finishing techniques and other inputs, to how we think about product design and its use and eventual disposal. This is a must-read for fashion designers who want to design better product that has less of an impact on the planet, as well as anyone in the apparel sector that has an interest in sustainable apparel and its lifecycle. Kate Fletcher and Lynda Grose have done a masterful job of compiling best practices, words of wisdom and detailed fashion experience in this interesting and useful read.

What a great book for a Textiles teacher and students alike. It is set out in three sensible sections so that you can clearly see what each topic is and what is contained within. I also liked the way that there is some focus on what actions an individual can take as opposed to just dealing with the actions of designers and large organisations.

There is a good mixture of informative text and applicable diagrams and photos. I recommend this book to those who want to know more about fashion and how it is linked to sustainability.

The complex interaction between these modes of mobilizing linguistic resources challenges some of our ideas about globalization, hinting that we are in a period of intensification of modernity, in which the limits of the nation-State are stretched, but not (yet) undone. At the same time, this book argues, this intensification also calls into question modernist ways of looking at language and identity, requiring a more serious engagement with capitalism and how it constitutes symbolic (including linguistic) as well as material markets.

Alexandre Duch�ne is Professor of Sociology of language and Director of the Institute of Multilingualism of the University and HEP of Fribourg (Switzerland). His recent publications include Ideologies across Nations (Mouton de Gruyter 2008) and Discourses of Endangerment (with Monica Heller, Continuum 2007).

Monica Heller is professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and the Department of Anthropology, University of Toronto, as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Her most recent book is Paths to Postnationalism: A Critical Ethnography of Language and Identity (2011, Oxford University Press).

About the Author
Jordan J. Louviere is Research Professor at the School of Marketing, University of South Australia Business School. He is particularly known for pioneering work in the design and application of discrete choice experiments (also called 'choice-based conjoint') and he also pioneered best-worst scaling (also known as 'Max-Diff Scaling'). He is co-author of Stated Choice Methods: Analysis and Application (Cambridge University Press, 2000).

David Hensher is Professor of Management at the University of Sydney. He is the author of numerous books and articles on discrete choice models, including Stated Choice Methods (Cambridge, 2000) and Applied Choice Analysis (Cambridge, 2005). He teaches discrete choice modelling to academic, business and government audiences, and is also a partner in Econometric Software, the developers of Nlogit and Limdep.

a long awaited guide

This book finally provides a comprehensive guide to designing and analysing choice experiments. (Probably a niche market). The authors (and W. Adamowicz, who contributes one chapter and is acknowledged in the inner title page) have been writing the book on choice experiments for many years, in the form of research papers. Until now readers have been left to guess at the intricacies of the mathematics used to construct the surveys, or set off in search of texts and papers on economics and statistical experimental design (particularly factorial design, which is not always well covered), or contact the authors directly. Finally it is all here in one place. This book explains the economics as well as the statistics. Examples are provided in transportation, environment and marketing. A great guide to understanding this area of social research.

This book is a very good source for someone who would like to study discrete choice analysis in depth. The presentation of the material is both intuitive and rigorous. KABUKI theatre first arose in 17th century Japan as a bawdy, populist alternative to the traditional Noh theatre of masks, which had flourished since the 1300s. Originally staged by female performers and prostitutes, kabuki soon became an all-male preserve, with female roles in plays and dance-dramas being taken by female impersonators known as onnagata. Many early kabuki plays originated in the bunraku (“puppet”) theatre (founded in Osaka in 1684). Significant productions from this period included Hinin No Adauchi (“The Outcast’s Revenge”, 1664), a slaughter-vengeance drama; Shitenno Ochigodachi (1673), which introduced the violent aragoto acting style; Daifukucho Sankai Nagoya (1697), which featured the first-ever shibaraku scene; and Keisei Asama-ga-Dake (“The Asamagadake Courtesan”, 1698), featuring a vengeful female ghost. Other plays were quickly fashioned to cash in on sensational news stories of the day, such as double suicides or murder rampages. Among the first most notable playwrights were Chikamatsu Monzaemon, Namiki Sosuke, and Sakurada Jisuke. And the kabuki theatre was not without its real-life dramas and rivalries; it is reported that in 1704, for example, the actor Ikushima Hanroku was executed for the onstage murder of Ichikawa Danjuro I, progenitor of perhaps the most illustrious acting lineage in kabuki history.
By the first decades of the 19th century, kabuki theatre – as exemplified by the works of playwright Tsuruya Nanboku IV – was renowned for its frequent displays of torture, mutilation, swordplay and supernatural horror.
UKIYO-E, the art of woodblock design and printing, enjoyed a symbiosis with the kabuki theatre almost from its inception in the late 17th century, with a significant number of images serving as posters for stage productions. Among the notable early practitioners of such images were Kiyonobu and Kiyomasu. Theatrical prints generally fell into two categories – kabuki-e, recreating specific scenes from plays, and yakusha-e, portraits of famous actors in various roles both real and imaginary (mitate). Many of the recipes, however, are available in other regional cookbooks; for larger and area collections.

A major classic

This book is truly a gem. Its 200 polished recipes bring back many happy memories. Reportedly, this famous restaurant is only open 4 days during the week from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Closed on weekends. Perhaps Mrs. Chase, now age 89, is finally sloiwing down. Apparently, the current Executive Chef is one of her great-grandsons, a MBA/Accountant who also graduated from Le Cordon Bleu Paris. If Mrs. Chase retires altogether, it's anyone's guess what will become of the iconic Dooky Chase Restaurant after its valiant recovery from devastation by Hurricane Katrina. Mrs. Chase lost her home in the storm as well and was relegated to a dismal FEMA trailer until matters improved. Glad I bought this wonderful cookbook with its great modern artwork and I look forward to making many of its treasured recipes.

Perfect recipes for tasty Louisiana dishes!

It's a great book with accurate recipes for really simple and tasty Louisiana food. If you like adding corn syrup, pectin and all sort of artificially-processed "crap" in your dishes, this is not the book for you!

Favorite cookbook EVER!

If you're a basic good ole soul food, stick to your ribs kinda cook, this is the only cookbook you'll ever need. The recipes are the best, but Mrs Chase has many wonderful, warm stories of growing up in her small home town of Madisonville, La. along with her delicious food! I like to give this as a shower/wedding gift. Warning...if you pick it up, you won't put it down!!!!

Great Reference

Its great to have a book that owners and veterinarians alike can read for reference. Ferrets aren't as popular as dogs and cats, therefore books and information on ferrets are hard to find. This book is a comfort to have for any ferret-owner.
