But many critics hailed The Berlin Stories, the reissue of two of his best novels, as his finest. In the book, a man named Christopher Isherwood, who is and is not the author, writes a story of exile, combining the best of Isherwood's real life with the best of the life he imagined.

Collection of two previously published novels written by Christopher Isherwood, published in 1946. Set in pre-World War II Germany, the semiautobiographical work consists of Mr. Norris Changes Trains (1935; U.S. title, The Last of Mr. Norris) and Goodbye to Berlin (1939). The Berlin Stories merge fact and fiction and contain ostensibly objective, frequently comic tales of marginal characters who live shabby and tenuous existences as expatriates in Berlin; the threat of the political horrors to come serves as subtext. In Goodbye to Berlin the character Isherwood uses the phrase "I am a camera with its shutter open" to claim that he is simply a passive recorder of events. The two novels that comprise The Berlin Stories made Isherwood's literary reputation; they later became the basis for the play I Am a Camera (1951; film, 1955) and the musical Cabaret (1966; film, 1972). -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

A Great Book

Berlin Stories is a wonderful book. I am reading it again it's so good!!!!!!! The writing is absolutely impeccable. Though I read it because of my obsession with the musical "Cabaret", I found it to be a great book in its own right. I think Isherwood would be proud of the current Broadway version of "Cabaret". I don't know what else to say:)

Ransom of Red Chief

I read this as a kid and I'm 82 now. For some reason in popped into my head and I searched my own library first in all the books of short stories I had. No luck. Checked the internet and found it but I don't like reading on my computer. So, of course, one checks amazon. I got my kick for 99 cents. Read it and laughed. Who doesn't love O. Henry?

It's even better now!

I loved this story when I read it in high school for a Classics class. After motherhood, it's even funnier. Two men kidnap a child (he calls himself Red Chief) with the intention of ransoming him back to his family. The kid turns out to be too much for 2 grown men to handle and they send him back without payment. The kid is fine but his kidnappers will never be the same.

A simple plot, great characters, perfect dialogue, creative scene and tension, all hall marks of O.Henry short stories. This one is among his best. No doubt about it. If you want laughs, this little story has a boatload. Have to have an ending with a twist? You got it!

O.Henry was a master of the English language. I enjoy his use of multi- syllabic words like Philoprogenitiveness.(tendency for many offspring in rural communities).A person could get an edjeekashun reading O.Henry stories.

Sadly though, it seems that if you want to become a famous short story writer you will have to do a stretch in the GrayBar University.

Great way to study

This book is a great way of learning without it being strenuous. Studying for the bar/MBE is a game of strategy. Since you're sure you're going to spends hours studying anyway, you want to find a book like this that will get you the valuable knowledge without the brain pain. You can learn more reading this book, from the book itself, but then also being fresh enough mentally to continue your work, or go back to 'normal life' (not studying for the bar for an hour or two) without being tapped out.

All the info is there; where the book succeeds in keeping you fresh is not in lessening the info, but in the way the information is presented and the communication/teaching ability of the author.

It's broken down into the eight topics and has a great question/answer flow to it. You can tell it's written by an experienced tutor on the topic, because he's a great manager of your learning process. Since you can't bring the book with you to the bar exam, the author manages the studying process so you won't have to.

About the Author

Sawan Sen holds a B.Sc, B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D from the University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India. She is currently an associate professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Academy of Technology, Hooghly, India. Her main research interests include power system stability analysis, system performance enhancement, and different soft computing techniques for solving power system problems like congestion management, cost optimization, and electricity pricing under regulated, deregulated, and smart grid environments.

Samarjit Sengupta holds a B.Sc, B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D from the University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India. He is currently a professor of electrical engineering in the Department of Applied Physics at the University of Calcutta. He has published 130 journal papers and eight books on various topics of electrical engineering. His main research interests include power quality instrumentation, power system stability, and security and power system protection. He is a fellow of IET and IETE, as well as a senior member of IEEE.

Abhijit Chakrabarti holds as Ph.D from the University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India. He is currently the vice chancellor of Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India and a professor at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. Previously he served on the West Bengal State Council of Higher Education as vice chairman and chairman. A life fellow of IE, he has authored 123 research papers and 12 books, and received the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Power Medal. He is a member of the AICTE including the NBA, as well as a member of different expert and policymaking committees for various universities.
