About the Author

As a young man, Harold Courlander (1908-1996) took a trip to Haiti with the intention of doing research for a novel. He discovered his lifelong passion, anthropology, which led him to further travels and research into Native Americans, Asians, Indians, and numerous African tribes. He preserved the history of these people in his many books of folklore and history.

George Herzog (1901–1983) was a musicologist and anthropologist specializing in Native American music. Like Courlander, he was intent on preserving the heritage of people, particularly through their music.

Madye Lee Chastain (1908-1989) wrote 17 children's books and illustrated many more.

Notable collection of African Folktales

Looking for African folktales? Look first to the work of Harold Courlander. He is one of the finest folktale anthropologists of his generation. "The Cow-Tail Switch and Other West African Stories" is one several of his books which are of interest to Africanists. (He also authored several similar books of folktales and traditional literature from other parts of the world.) In 1947 when "The Cow-Tail Switch and Other West African Stories" was first published, there were far fewer books of this kind than there are today. Two things that make Courlander's work stand out, even now, are: 1) his well written prose, and 2) the notes, which give the reader more information about the story, where it came from, and how to understand it in the context of the culture that produced it. This second point is especially important today, when a lot of books of so-called "African" stories are published without any background information at all. This collection of stories, all from Western Africa, is great for kids and adults. (Harold Courlander is also the author of "The African", which bears many similarities to "Roots" by Alex Haley, though Haley's book was published years later.)

This book has 17 African legends, many of them are funny.

I reviewed one of the many stories from this book, The Cow Tail Switch, which is the cover story.
One day in the village of Kundi there was a brave hunter named Ogaloussa. He had to go out to hunt because he had 6 sons and one on the way. He knew they would eat a lot. The first day he had not come home the family was a little worried but not that much. After a week and 3 months of waiting for him they began to really worry. Then the baby was born and they named him Puli. Puli's first words were " Where is my father?" Another son said, "Yes, where is our father?" "I saw which direction he went," said another son.
So the 6 sons set off to find their father. They found him dead with his body parts everywhere. One son said could he put his bones back together and another said he could put the flesh on. "We are not done," yelled another son, "He needs blood and I will give him some." "I can give him breath," said another son. "We are still not done," protested another son. "I will give him the power of movement." "I can give him the power of speech," said the last son and they put him back together.
The sons brought Ogaloussa back to the village and everyone was happy to see him. The next day he made a very nice beaded cow tail and was going to give it to one of his sons. He ended up giving it to Puli who first asked, "Where is my father?" I would rate this story a 7.8 on a scale of 1-10 because it is a great story. I also liked this story because it was interesting how they put him back together

Good, Not Great, Compendium of Military Leaders

This is a good, not great book. While there are some very good stories regarding leaders, the analyses are somewhat superficial. This is likely a function of the word limits provided to the contributors. I felt like I was reading awards citations written by fawning subordinates about leaders who are just a little "too perfect". The fact is that some of these leaders had faults that are simplistically over-looked but important to consider in any serious leadership discussions. This is a primer for introducing key leaders but should be used with care since it does not provide the depth necessary to critically analyze the leadership used by the subjects. It is a level above "Wiki" knowledge but does not substitute for in-depth biographies.

Good bio sketches; poor leadership studies

The book is a good book to help military officers study successful leaders, and possibly motivate these officers to grow, but that's about the extent of its utility.

The book is based on the trait theory of leadership, and each chapter illustrates a trait through the story of a general. Two problems; one, most in behavioral science have moved past the trait theory of leadership (about 70 years ago), and two, the bios sometimes feel shoe-horned to fit the trait being described.

Not a bad book, but not great either.

George Washington was the highlight of this book!

A visitor to New York can step back in time and touch our Colonial and Revolutionary past with a tour of Fraunces Tavern on 54 Pearl Street in lower Manhattan. In this haunt of old New York you will find a selection of draft beers, oysters, and American history. This is a beautifully-restored colonial tavern that was founded by Samuel Fraunces in 1767. It was in the Long room of Fraunces tavern in 1783 that General George Washington bade an emotional farewell to his officers after winning victory in the American Revolution. He had hoped to retire peacefully to his farm at Mount Vernon. It was not to be.

George Washington was the "indispensable man" of the American Revolution. He led the nation in a long struggle against the greatest military power of that age -- the British Empire. The American Revolution has proven to be by far the most successful Revolution in human history. It is the Revolution whose reverberations that continually encourage the cause of human liberty are felt to this day.

At the heart of this Revolution was a leader of exceptional integrity. He shared the sufferings of the men under his command at Valley Forge and throughout the Revolution. On March 15, 1783 Washington addressed his officers in Fraunces Tavern thus: "I have never left your side one moment...I have been the constant companion and witness of your Distress, and not among the last to feel and acknowledge your merits...I have ever considered my own Military reputation as inseparably connected with that of the Army."

Some of Washington's officers were tempted by the prospect of using their military superiority to the over the rings of the Colonial government. They wanted him to become an American Caesar. Washington rebuffed those who sought to "overturn the liberties of our Country". He demanded that they do nothing "which, viewed in the calm light of reason, will lessen the dignity and sully the glory you have hitherto maintained."

At the conclusion of the war the Continental Congress was essentially broke. His officers feared that neither they nor their men would be paid. Washington sought to reassure his officers with a densely written text explaining the nation's financial difficulties. He pulled his spectacles out of his pocket to read more easily and remarked, "Gentlemen, you must pardon me, I have grown gray in your service and now find myself going blind."

In 1783 New York was the nation's capitol. George Washington formally resigned his commission on 23 December, 1783. He addressed the president of Congress, Thomas Mifflin as follows: "Having now finished the whorl assigned me, I retire from the great theatre of Action; an bidding an Affectionate farewell to this August body under whose orders I have so long acted, I here offer my commission , and take my leave of all the employments of public life." Mifflin responded, "You have conducted the great military contest with wisdom and fortitude, through invariably regarding the rights of the civil government through all disasters and changes."

I could not get as interested in these stories as I usually do with Lisa Scottoline's stories but they were still good.

wonderful tale of the Afrikaner people.

wonderful little book that tells the long tale of the white man in south africa and his endurance and his legacy as well as his barbarism, but mostly his culture. A very insightful book that gives a whirlwind tour through the history of the Afrikaners and their settlement as a Dutch colony to thier persectution by the English, and their war with the Zulus as they fled the British on the Great Trek. An honest portrayel that shows these people to be neither villian nor heroes but products of their circumstance of being threatened from both sides, by the imperial English and the numerious Black Africans, they became hardened and in western eyes, cruel. The book is outdated but worth the read if you can find it.

A sweet romance that explores a difficult topic.

In 1998, I read Bruce Bawer's book, A Place at the Table. In it, he postulates a simple idea: being LGBT doesn't mean, or require, being a part of a perceived subculture that emphasized (at the time) promiscuity and a rejection of Christianity and its values. He proposed that being "gay" was not immoral, even for Christian believers.

His postulate is now the way many people do think of LGBT : people who want committed relationships, a meaningful relationship with God, marriage, and family. LGBT people are fundamentally people who want mainly what "straight" people want.

But - especially in the Bible belt of rural America - bigotry based on fundamentalist biblical interpretation is not a hypothetical problem for either LGBT kids or their parents. For those that are LGBT, there is tension between city and country, fundamentalist and main-stream theology, public life and home life.

This isn't written as literary fiction. It's a romance. However, this book explores heavier themes of Lesbianism and faith with skill and compassion.

Your Next Favorite YA Romance

This book is one of the dreamiest, most romantic YAs I've read in a long while. Anna and the French Kiss level of romantic. Jo is an unforgettable character who knows exactly who she is, even while wearing an awful bridesmaid dress at her preacher dad's latest wedding. She sacrifices that certainty for her father, family, and faith, all while falling in love with the magnetic girl-next-door. It's sweet, hot, sexy, and so funny. And it all wraps up with the most romantic movie HEA squee of YES. I loved it.

Like Jaye Robin Brown's first book NO PLACE TO FALL, this new story is oozing with southern charm. The romance is sweet and spicy and so are the characters. I love how authentic the voices sound, as well as a premise that explores the struggle of an already out gay character feeling pressured by her radio-minister father to hide her sexual orientation, just before she meets the girl of her dreams. Jo is a whip-smart main character, who values friendship, faith, family, and falling in love. You'll be rooting for her to attain all of the above, plus her own radio show.

Pub humor and ancient mysteries from secret places beneath the Vatican, all put together in a tightly weaved fabric that is the saga of Father Brennan and his eclectic band of pals who, with amazing wit, conspire daily from the backroom of the local pub. You will also learn a lot about the Zen of fly fishing the rivers of Ireland.

Never a wasted opportunity for humor, but there’s even more in these pages. The story is also interspersed with poignancy and depth of character that had me riding a roller coaster of emotion, sometimes laughing through tears and sometimes truly concerned about a character’s well-being or the outcome of a tense situation. There is, however, instilled early-on in the back of the reader’s mind, that no matter how dire the circumstance, Fr. Brennan will emerge as the conquering hero.

A great literary work and highest stars assigned. This reader looks forward to the next installment, as I know there is plenty of adventure left in the life of Father James Brennan and much more craic.

An Irish Tale with Fishy Twists!

An Irish Yarn with Fishy Twists
I always had the opinion that fishing was a boring occupation that men used as an excuse to get away from family life for a day lazing by the river! However, this book has set me right on that, for I know now that fly-fishing is indeed a scientific art. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that this is a boring book about fishing – far from it! It is a highly entertaining tale of an Irish Parish priest who is deceptively wily and intelligent. When you come to the end of the story of the ‘con trick’ (I won’t spoil anything by explaining this) you come to a phase in the middle of the book where, to be honest, it almost lost me. However, it’s worth sticking at because the story suddenly takes a twist that will remind you of a ‘soap’ programme with gossip spreading so thick and fast that suddenly an ‘innocent’ parish priest becomes something he is not in the eyes of the community, so much so that it comes to the notice of Rome. It then takes another curious twist which is worthy of Dan Brown or Simon Toyne as we are thrown into the ‘underworld’ of the church. However, fear not, for our hero priest has the whole thing under control!
This book will surprise you as it surprised me. It is a humorous story with some serious undertones in places. I feel I must warn you that you will be subjected to sudden bursts or snorts of laughter which could be detrimental to your well-being if you happen to be eating or drinking at the time. Well done, Norman, this book is a triumph.
