Reconstruction's Freedom Road

Even though this fictional book was assigned for a class in Civil War history, it turned out to be an enjoyable assignment. It is a very readable account of Reconstruction from 1865 to 1877. The book describes how well Reconstruction was working for recently emancipated slaves in South Carolina, and how bad it was going for the elite southern whites there. It does an amazing job of portraying the positive struggles of African Americans, and some working class whites, and how they were succeeding, until the final withdrawal of Union troops from the South.

This book is fun to read in the beginning, but the sad consequences of Reconstruction bring it to the inevitable conclusion. This does not detract from the book's accurate portrayal of what really caused Reconstruction to fail.

This is an excellent book that you will have no trouble reading in one sitting. If you read this book, you will understand what really happened during Reconstruction, and the real facts that they failed to tell most of us in high school. This book was published in 1944, long before most US historians recognized how southern historians had distorted the country's view of Reconstruction. Thanks to recent historians, we now have a much more accurate picture of this era.

Then the notice comes that all the men over age 21 are meant to go into town to vote. From this simple act comes more change than Gideon ever counted on, and maybe more than he wanted, at least at first.

Based on historic facts for those who care to dig deeply enough, Freedom Road presents a searing, alternative view of Reconstruction, using the words and work of the people it helped; the people for whom freedom was recently earned with great difficulty, and not to be forsaken at any price.

Freedom Road should be required reading for any devotee of quality fiction, for anyone who thinks they know the story of Reconstruction, and for anyone who is not afraid of being presented with issues that cause anger, introspection and, ultimately, hope that a better day has finally come.

Still fighting the Civil War

Wan't quite clear on some points of reconstruction. Although I was surprised at the amount of Northern involvement in trying to recreate the Southern "aristocracy". It was a very informative book. I lived in Alabama for several years and now live in Virginia. I am originally a mid-westerner so I ha d quite a cultural adjustment to make. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially to those who have never lived in the South, it explains a lot of their attitude/bias on several counts.

loved and used text book from culinary school

This text/formula source book for bakery and bakers is a replacement for my original, well abused, loved and used text book from culinary school. I preferred to purchase the original edition so that I did not have to re formulate all the high altitude adjustments I have made with the formulas. I admit that theory and aspects of baking evolve and change over time, with introduction of new gadgets and modified ingredients, as the following editions of this book attest to. But for me, this text and its theoretical aspects, and unique layout for the baking formulas, remain true and applicable today. This is not your day to day home bakers book. This is full scale, bakery use formulas.

A Very Well Rounded Worth the Buy Baking Book

I am a professional chef and bought this as a replacement to an old one that got destroyed. It is a great baking book that not only goes into great detail explaining all basic baking and pastry work but goes into some advanced stuff as well. It has wonderful charts and graphs and instructions are easy to follow and understand. The recipes are beyond amazing as well. I have used many a baking book and always come back to this one for basic work. Love this book!

I like it. Plenty of technical information and fills in the blanks about the 'why' for anything I question that other sources may jot answer. I like the history tidbits given, and the recipes are pretty decent as well. I bought this used for a baking class. We use it every day.

About the Author

Ralph E. Hanson is the chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Previously, he was on the faculty of the P.I. Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University where he taught for fifteen years. For more than fifteen years he has taught media literacy and introduction to mass communication. He was a founding developer of West Virginia University’s online extended learning program He has also taught newswriting, blogging and commentary writing, community journalism, and diffusion of innovations. Ralph has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and anthropology from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in journalism from Iowa State, and a doctorate in sociology from Arizona State University. I really enjoyed reading this book for a few reasons

I really enjoyed reading this book for a few reasons. When you start reading the book, the first thing you will notice is that its broken down into sections. The sections are awesome! In the first part of the book, it talks about the different herbs. It gives pictures, talks about the different uses for it and gives some background on it. Then it has another column that gives you examples of how that herb is used a well as other names and where to find it.

In the second part of the book, it lists different types of issues that you might have that vary from skin to hair to general. It then goes in to list treatments. It usually list two to three treatments and then explains how to make those treatments. I recently tried the one for dandruff and I was impressed. I totally love the herbal remedies this book has to offer! Its super easy to read and do!

Overall I think its a great book. Alot of the remedies can be made without having to get specialty items meaning its stuff that you have around the house!

I have always been intrigued by herbal treatments and their benefits. I found this book to be quite informative, it is well written and doesn't overwhelm the reader. I particularly enjoyed reading chapter 2 which gives helpful tips about starting your own indoor garden, the required tools and also suggests which herbs to grow. The book also gives a history of herbal medicine and how it has evolved through the ages. I also enjoyed filling out the questionnaire to find out my herbal IQ, which was pretty impressive I must say ;) The book also covers aromatherapy, something which I have always found interesting. Plus it features more than 200 recipes for face and hair care, body and skin care, intimate care, mental health and wellness, common ailments, home cleaning products and lots more. Overall, very informative book. You will definitely learn something from it, just like I did.

It's a keeper!!! Awesome DIY remedies for HEALTH and BEAUTY!!

If you've always wanted to try making your own plant based medicines and products then this book is exactly that Do-It-Yourself Herbal Medicine! The book kept me intrigued from beginning to end. Lots of important information on a variety herbs that can be used to make home remedies and products. There are 5 must have herbs they discuss in depth. Plus 30 more herbs they tell you about. Definitely great if you don't like taking over the counter medications, and want to try going the more natural route. These herbal remedies have been around for centuries, so I don't know why I never thought to try some of them, because my husband doesn't like taking over the counter meds. I am definitely making some for him. Especially with cold season coming up soon, some of these remedies will come in handy. There are remedies for your inner and outer body! And surprisingly it includes remedies for conditions like allergies, depression, ADHD, and anxiety! It has a lot of recipes for almost anything you can think of!
If you have color damaged hair like I do, from having to keep up with my grays!! Be sure to check out the recipe on page 102. Three ingredients are all you need to make this Aloe peppermint hair mask treatment! Or page 100 for chapped lips. You can make a Chamomile lip scrub, with only four ingredients! I am really liking the skin and hair recipes. Some of the recipes are for a one time use, which is great. You make it and then use it. For most of the skin and body recipes it calls for specified essential oils. This is great, I have a stash of them and wasn't really sure what to do with them besides putting them in a diffuser. The book does also briefly talk about essential oils and info on what quality grade oil you may have. I love that this book is well written, and easy to follow directions. It's a keeper, and I'm excited to get started!! I definitely want to do an update on using the recipe for color damaged hair, and let you all know how that went. So I'll be back soon! I did receive this book in exchange for my honest review, and I am very thankful to have had this opportunity to do so.

The difficulty, from this point of view, was neither economic, nor political, nor moral, nor ideological; it was all of these, which constituted manifestations of a fundamental antagonism between modern and premodern worlds.

The premodern quality of the Southern world was imparted to it by its dominant slaveholding class. Slavery has existed in many places, side by side with other labor systems, without producing anything like the civilization of the South. Slavery gave the South a special way of life because it provided the basis for a regional social order in which the slave labor system could dominate all others. Southern slavery was not “mere slavery” – to recall Louis Hartz’s luckless term – but the foundation on which rose a powerful and remarkable social class: a class constituting only a tiny portion of the white population and yet so powerful and remarkable as to try, with more success than our neo-abolitionists care to see, to build a new, or rather to rebuild an old, civilization.

If there were a MOOC course about American slavery, this would be one of its basic texts. Should be required reading for the neo-Confederates who claim the Civil War was not fought over slavery.

About the Author
Mary Lou Roberts has been a tenured professor of marketing at the University of Massachusetts and held a number of administrative positions there including Director of Development. She currently teaches Internet Marketing to a global cadre of students at the Harvard University Extension School. Her Ph.D. in marketing is from the University of Michigan. She is senior author of Direct Marketing Management, 2e, available on her website www.marylouroberts.info. She has published extensively in marketing journals in the U.S. and Europe. Dr. Roberts is a frequent presenter on programs of both professional and academic marketing organizations, and has consulted and provided planning services and management training programs for a wide variety of corporations and non-profit organizations. She has been an active member of many professional organizations and has served on a number of their boards.

Debra Zahay is Professor and Department Chair at St. Edward's University. Austin, Texas. She holds A Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Illinois, an M.A. in Management from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, a J.D. from Loyola University in Chicago and her undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Zahay researches how firms can facilitate customer relationships, particularly using customer information. Her current and recent research topics include customer information management for competitive advantage; information use in new product development and, particularly, crowd-sourcing; data warehousing in CRM environments; email personalization and other aspects of interactive marketing. Some of the journals in which she has published include Journal of Product Innovation Management, Decision Sciences, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Interactive Marketing, Journal of Database Marketing, and in the working paper series for the Marketing Science Institute. She has presented her work at numerous academic and practitioner conferences. Dr. Zahay's prior teaching experiences include North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Zahay has been the President of her own database and relationship management consulting firm since 1993 and has extensive experience helping companies identify and develop customer relationships. Her prior business experience includes senior marketing management responsibilities at MCI Telecommunications and Dun & Bradstreet. She has also served as a Vice President on the Executive Board of the Chicago American Marketing Association and currently serves on the Board of the Chicago Association of Direct Marketing.

Poorly written. This book contains a wealth of info, unfortunately it could use a lot of editing

If you are an instructor considering this text, please keep looking. The book is somewhat dated, but it's real problem is a lack of editing. There are random factoids scattered in with useful text which makes many passages unnecessarily confusing. For example: Does it really matter whether Jerry Yang was rumored to have been forced out of Yahoo? That is the sort of detail that is somewhat randomly included. The authors obviously know a lot about the early days of the internet, but that doesn't make all that information relevant to internet marketing.

Also, don't be confused by the "Kindle" Edition. This is not a Kindle book but what's called a "print replica" which means most eBook features are not available - very frustrating for a book about the internet. One would hope that for a $50 "Kindle" book the publisher could have taken the time to actually convert the book into a true e-Book format. Even a PDF version would have been more useful than this print replica version.
