Nicely written.Informative. It should be accompanied by Excel templates downloadable from [...] but you get redirected to [...] where there is no such thing. Chapter 10 from the first edition should also have been there for download but it is not. Also a glossary that defines the terms used in the book should have been there but it is neither. Such a pity.

About the Author
Anne Frye earned a BA in Holistic Midwifery in 1979. She has taught, written, and provided consultation services for midwives for the past 28 years. She has authored four textbooks written from the perspective of a midwife in homebirth practice. Her other titles include Understanding Diagnostic Tests in the Childbearing Year: A Holistic Approach, Holistic Midwifery: Vol. II: Care during Labor and Birth, and Healing Passage: A Midwife's Guide to the Care and Repair of the Tissues Involved in Birth (currently out of print and being revised).

A review for those who aren't midwifes...

This is a wonderful text. Unfortunately it is in a soft cover, unlike vol. 2 which is hard cover, but that aside, it is wonderful.

I am a first-time mom who is planning an unattended home birth. Because of various problems I've also ended up without prenatal care so this volume has proven invaluable to me!! It is clear and exhaustive. This volume has a lot of information directed exclusively for midwives (philosophy of midwivery, how to set up a practice, how to work with different kinds of women, initiating contact and establishing care, etc.), but there is plenty of information useful to "do-it-yourself" prenatal care. It covers what to do during a prenatal exam during each trimester, special circumstances, problems that can occur during pregnancy and information on conditions that might preexist pregnancy.

There is a good section that explains anatomy and physiology that you need to know and I found it easy for me, as a non-medical/non-scientific person, to understand. The index is very thorough.

If you are buying the second volume and aren't sure you should get this one I would recommend that you do get this one because the second volume says that you should review the anatomy and physiology covered in the first volume since it doesn't repeat it and the foundation is essential to understanding the information in the second volume. (If you have medical/midwivery training it may not be so necessary, but then you might appreciate the text for other reasons).

Overall I'd say that if you plan an unattended birth and want to be as informed and safe as possible it is very worthwhile to purchase this volume as well as the second volume and invaluable if you are doing your own prenatal care. If nothing else it can give guidance on when you need to seek a healthcare professional. If you have an attendant then it may only be useful to you if you like to know everything and are willing to pay this much. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it to the non-midwife.

Oh, don't let the term "Holistic" throw you. It gives in-depth medical information as well as giving some alternative medicine information. My husband is a bio-chemist researcher and has worked as a nurse; he is very pleased with the scientific information in this volume and the next.

The best of the best

If I had to choose one book on pregnancy and birth from my bookshelf (a very hard pick!), this would be the one. Although not aimed at the general public, women planning a natural birth would find authoritative and invaluable information in this book. Midwife Anne Frye uses her own experience and midwifery wisdom as well as a thorough but critical look at the medical research in the subjects that she addresses. She brings, to my mind, the best of medical research with a holistic and gentle approach. I'm looking forward to Volume 2!

The best midwifery text available!

I am a 2nd year, bachelor of Midwifey student in New Zealand. "Holistic Midwifery" along with Anne Fryes "Understanding Diagnostics" were required texts for our degree program. Both of these books together are priceless! I have read both from cover to cover (over several weeks in my summer holidays!)and am amazed with Anne's fabulous ability to cover issues thoroughly with depth and understanding that rivals any academic author. I was fortunate to speak to Anne personally on several occasions and was awed by her modesty and her obvious love of work. I imagine Anne sitting at her computer typing from morning to night, her 2nd and 3rd volumes which are yet to come so she can share her wealth of information with midwives, students, mothers, anybody with an interest in pregnacy and childbirth. Well done Anne, I wait with uncontained enthusiasm for volumes 2 and 3!

Mary was an Early Years, primary and SEN teacher for many years, including deputy and headship before working as an academic in the University sector.

Her work includes running professional development courses and events for teachers and teacher trainers, research and publishing. Alice has worked in education in England and abroad. a stimulating introduction, with diverse insights from the inane to the profound

A quick scan of this VSI indicated that it contained a single equation (p=1/2 for a coin toss), reasonable considering the limited depths of explanation possible in this format, but nevertheless indicative of the depth that this introduction to networks attempts. In fairness, it makes good use of graphs. At the time of this review, Wikipedia indicated that 'network' may refer to any of 13 non-proper noun subtopics, any of which may fall within the ambit of this VSI so, again, it can only offer a reader a sense of the extreme breadth and complexity of the networks topic.

My interest was piqued early by the social network representation of a central Australian aboriginal group. No reference or researcher names were given and my own web search suggests that the tribe name must have been spelled Aranda, Arrernte or Arunta but certainly not Arunda as in the book. While this eroded my confidence in the accuracy of this VSI edition, most other areas of discussion identified researchers and the limited bibliography, again excusable up to a point in a VSI book, was of less concern.

The VSI is structured around the topography, trends, dynamics, classification, uses and numerous other features of networks. In each case myriad examples are offered from ecology, neurology, various associations of words and people, the internet, the `six degrees of separation' theory, and many more. There is more emphasis on social networks and the examples and observations range from the inane to the common sense to the profound. The exposition is fresh and engaging. One interesting topic on network structure dealt with how scientific profile and success is a product of network structure (I was interested in how this worked for scientific paper citation) and this topic provided an excellent foundation for further reading and thinking through the issue, as I believe it does for many other networks topics.

In keeping with the book's focus on the features of networks, it provides a useful review in its final chapter, "All the World's a Net; or Not?". Accompanied with the fine range of examples, this is a useful and engaging introduction to the diverse subject of networks.

best intrductory book on the subject

This is by far the best introductory book on the subject that I could find. I read three other books written by experts in the field: "Linked" by Barabasi, "Connected" by Christakis and found both to be shallow; also "Understanding Social Networks" by Kadushin which is too dense. I highly recomend this book for its accessibility, clarity, substance and breadth of coverage.

A good road map to road maps everywhere.

The book walks you through the various networks, the Internet, food webs (they're not chains as you would have told before), molecular networks, sexual partners and airline networks, among many. There are a bunch of tidbits of information throughout the book to keep you entertained but you won't get lost in the myriads of networks quoted in the book as the author uses these fun facts about networks effectively to paint the overall road map of what network theory is and where it is headed.

There are two things I particularly liked about the book. The first thing is that it provides us with an alternative way to understand familiar natural or social phenomena. Without network structures in mind, it is hard to understand why extinction of one species leads to extinction of other ostensibly unrelated species, or why African Americans are 1.3 times more likely to contract STI's than white counterparts. It is important to recognize the part network plays if we are to take any policy interventions to prevent extinction or spread of viruses, or else we can waste tons of resources for nothing. We can't see the forest for the trees.

The second thing is that author direct us to the idea of centrality without getting too technical. The number of links is one way to measure how important (or central) the node is, but it is just one way to do so. There are a few other useful ways to gauge the centrality and the authors explain what these are and how these can explain the phenomena that cannot be explained by a simple degree. My favorite example in the book was Anchorage airport, whose links are not that many but important nonetheless on the other metric (I'll stop right here because I don't want to spoil the surprise for you). Once again, the book makes us realize that we need to acknowledge not just the number of links each node has but also *how* it is placed in the network to detect where the choke point is or to construct robust networks.

A little drawback of the book is the lack of graphs. I was hoping to see more graphical representations. The author warns of the use of a graph to represent certain types of networks and I totally agree. But then there are occasions when a picture is worth a thousand words, and it is especially true when your subject is *graph* theory. For example, the explanation of transitivity could use a little graph, with just three nodes, which would have saved a lot of explanations. This is definitely not a deal breaker though.

Overall, an entertaining and easy-to-read introductory book on network.

Longtime fan who isn't disappointed!

This is exactly what I wanted, I'm so glad I ended up buying it. My set is perfect, I don't have bent in edges like others have mentioned. I'm going to have to be quite careful with this set, the white is so gorgeous in person. If anybody reading this is skeptical about buying this collection, I say go for it! It's a great price for what you're getting. This is truly a wonderful gift for any Twilight fan.

Far more than I expected

I loved the movies, however, I wasn't interested in merely "reading the movies" again. There was no need to worry. As it turned out, many of the films scenes were summations….compilations…. of several scenes from the books, therefore, you get quite a bit of new content in the books. Also, the books do a wonderful job of fleshing out and clarifying a few times that confused me from the movies. By way of a small example of this, Bella acted so mortified in the film at her own wedding. When you add the fact that she had the gory nightmare the night before, it left me wondering if she was unsure of marrying Edward? Did she have fears of marrying into the vampire life? Was she having regrets regarding Jake? In the book, her feelings are crystal clear. She merely despised being the center of attention, the spectacle of a wedding, the fear of her clumsiness, etc. but there was NO hesitation in marrying Edward. All such confusions were clarified, and beautifully so and I found that very satisfying. The relationships are explored more deeply than time allows for in a film and so I found myself more emotional than I ever imagined, shedding a tear many times throughout the series. Some scenes were so beautiful, I couldn't understand why they were left from the movie or played more faithfully to the scene in the book (like some scenes were watered down). For example, the extent of her love for Jake and her pain in leaving him after the fight with the newborns that left him many broken bones, was played out so beautifully in the book. I wish they had been truer to the book on that one for sure. Reading this series was so satisfying that I found it quickly became the best part of my day. I looked forward to when I could become engrossed in this lovely fantasyland get-away. I'm 52 years old and do not ever remember crying just because I read the words ….."The End".

Missing chapter.

The Kindle set of books was fine, until Breaking Dawn. The whole part of the birth and Jacobs imprinting were missing from the book. Instead they repeated the Bella chapter twice. So it went directly into the chapter of the burning. I own the hard cover books and this is not an issue in them. Needless to say, I was unhappy with this purchase.

In 1955, psychiatrist Grof (The Ultimate Journey: Consciousness and the Mystery of Death), then a Czech medical student, began studying the effects of LSD on human subjects (including himself) in pioneering experiments focused on schizophrenia symptoms. Over time, Grof's interest shifted to diagnostic and therapeutic use of psychedelics, in part because of his first visit to the U.S. (where he now lives) in 1965, when "the American psychedelic movement was profoundly influencing contemporary culture." First published in 1975, this book foresees the psychedelic experience causing a "radical revision of the current scientific worldview" comparable to the 20th century "conceptual cataclysm" in Newtonian physics-a view Grof appears to hold still. Though the LSD experience can encompass virtually "any perceptual, emotional or psychosomatic manifestations," and varies wildly among individuals and individual trips, Grof finds subjects' reported experience entirely credible, and indicative of complex mental processes at work: some subjects relive childhood and "perinatal" experiences, some "regress" to previous lives and non-human life forms. When I first got this book, I thought I was going to read a pretty cool book about LSD and learn a few things. BUT WOW this blew my mind. It was written so well, perfectly explaining how "LSD is to psychology as a microscope is to biology". Sure you'll learn a good amount of information about the drug itself, independent of the interaction that's produced with humans; but the content that will really open your eyes is how it reacts with the human mind-body complex. What makes it more fascinating is that there are no medicinal aspects of LSD - as in it's completely reactionary. What that means is that any similar effects experienced between X individuals is nothing more than a coincidence; whereas the effects of consumable alcohol are absolute - enough of a certain quantity in your blood and you will experience specific physiological effects such as thinner blood, loss of fear, impaired memory formation, impaired judgement, loss of coordination and balance, dehydration, death, etc. So for example, one of the most common effects experienced from consuming LSD is dilated pupils; however not everyone experiences this and some even experience constricted pupils. There is no medicinal mechanism of LSD that triggers specific reactions with the size of the pupil. It's as if this substance is nothing more than a psychedelic mirror of your mind.

Innovative and a completely stunning approach to LSD and the discovery of the psyche's depths

This is an exceptional work. Dr Grof proves to be a pioneer in the human psyche. The book gives a new dimension to psychiatry and psychiatric care. We had Freud, Jung and now we have Grof adding a new dimention to the human psyche with his decades of LSD and holotropic breath research. This book is a must read for everybody who wants to learn about the correlation of prenatal experiences and psychiatric or psychological pathology and expanded consciousness by controlled use of psychedelics like LSD.

Over 500 children with ages between 0 and 18 years were included in this exhaustive study, documenting Doppler measurements in about 3,000 basal cerebral arteries. Basic reference values were obtained which involved adapting the methodology and available equipment to the special re� quirements of the pediatrician. Moreover, the influence of biological and physiological factors on these Doppler values has also been considered in addition to those of disease and therapy. The result is an impressive record of the many applications of trans� cranial Doppler sonography during childhood. It is not difficult to predict that this methodology will be of lasting value and capable of further de� velopment.
