About the Author
James W. Kalat is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at North Carolina State University, where he taught courses in introduction to psychology and biological psychology from 1977 through 2012. He received an AB degree summa cum laude from Duke University and a PhD in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the author of INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY (10th Edition) and co-author with Michelle Shiota of EMOTION (2nd Edition). In addition to textbooks, he has written journal articles on taste-aversion learning, the teaching of psychology, and other topics. He was twice the program chair for the annual convention of the American Psychological Society, now named the Association for Psychological Science.

This is a terrific book by a terrific author.
i was just disappointed to have it delivered to myself when it was a gift and the person the gift was meant for, got the receipt.
One of the few occasions when Amazon stuffed up and it was difficult to register with Amazon the stuff up.
Not a disaster just a disappointment.
The book itself is the best of its kind.

Very interesting and easy to read text book. Not as mundane as most text books. It was required for my neurophysiological psychology class, which turned out to be one of my favorite classes ever only exacerbated by the ease of reading this book.

HENRY H. LIU, PHD, is a Software Engineer specializing in developing distributed, high performing, scalable enterprise software products. He is a certified Sun Enterprise Java Architect, IBM XML Developer, and Microsoft .Net Developer. Prior to becoming a software engineer, he had a physicist career and published over 30 research papers in physics while working in the national labs of China, France, Germany, and the United States. His honors include being the author of the highly acclaimed Software Performance and Scalability: A Quantitative Approach (Wiley, 2009), �an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow in Germany, and a �CMG 2004 Best Paper Award recipient for applying queuing theory to analyzing software performance. He is particularly encouraged that over 600 universities/colleges world-wide have used his works in teaching software technologies to CS students.

It is a great book for Java Performance Enginners and QAers. The book organization and explanations make ir a required reading. It is very clear and invite to investigate more about Queue Theory, and so on.

A very useful book for all levels of Java developers

This is a quantitative, rigorous, unique Java performance book, written by a well-recognized software engineer with more than a decade's experience in the field. It starts with an easy-to-understand introduction to queuing theory, and then expands into both the modern hardware architecture and JVM internals to help a reader establish a solid knowledge base to start with for understanding Java performance and scalability.

The second part of the book is about Java performance and scalability in practice. Chapter 5 illustrates how compressing ordinary object pointers (OOPs) helped a real enterprise Java product in terms of saving JVM Eden and Tenured spaces. Chapter 6 presents a quantitative case study of tuning enterprise Java application performance and scalability based on a real product. This case study can be used by an enterprise Java dev team as a template about how to conduct performance and scalability testing, how to analyze bottlenecks, and how to tune all tunable parameters to achieve the best possible performance and scalability for a product. Chapter 7 uses quantitative data to demonstrate the importance of choosing efficient algorithms for building a potentially high performing, scalable enterprise application. It also quantitatively shows the efficacy of a widely applicable performance tuning technique of array processing that no enterprise application should miss.

The last two chapters are about Java performance and scalability on Linux and VMware. The Linux chapter reveals an important fact that performance on Linux is not a giving out of the box and one must know how to tune to get it. The VMware chapter serves not only as a performance-oriented tutorial about how a VM works by virtualizing CPUs and memory, but also as a concrete case study of the rarely closely-examined performance disparity between a VM and a comparable physical system.

Finally, the two benchmarking programs named CPUCheck and DiskCheck programs described in the appendices are handy utilities for quickly benchmarking the raw power of CPUs and disk I/O that critically determine the performance and scalability of an enterprise application. In summary, it's a very useful book for all levels of Java professionals.

Good basic reference

This book was referred to me as a good basic reference to woodframe construction principles and it fulfills that nicely. Although dated it covers all the basics of sound contruction principles needed for the small project I have in mind. Good resource for someone inexperienced with building wood structures and needing some fundamental guidlelines.

This is a book that is especially good for anyone wanting to brush up on their framing techniques. Particularly good at explaining roof framing. Excellent drawings and sketches. Lots of old school seabee know how for anyone in a farm or rural setting.

Not very clear.

This book would have been better had it had english translations as well as the spanish words. It is hard to teach your children another language when you dont speak it yourself and cant understand half the book.

DEAL BREAKER is the first in Harlan Coben's new series staring sports agent Myron Bolitar. I must say I cheated a bit by reading two of the Bolitar series before the first. However, this did not detract from my enjoyment of the first. Bolitar, an ex-college and NBA standout switched to being a sports agent and part-time private eye after a crippling injury forced him to drop out of NBA competition. Harlan Coben, an accomplished and award-winning mystery writer ably develops believable plots with compelling characters. Myron Bolitar manifests humor, striking good looks and a magnetic personality that turns women's heads and makes men sit up and take notice. Myron's best friend and business partner, Windsor Horne Lockwood III, better known as, Win, is the wealthy intellect of the company who loves to kick ass and kill if necessary. The beautiful Esperanza, Myron's secretary, once women's national professional wrestling champion who fought under the name, Pocohontas, adds humor and organization to Myron's outer office. Myron lands his first big client, rookie quarterback, Christian Steele. All goes well until Steele's fiancee, Kathy Culver, turns up missing. When no trace of her is found after 18 months she is presumed dead and law enforcement stops looking. Enters the gorgeous and charming Jessica Culver, Kathy's older sister and Myron's former live-in girlfriend. Jessica convinces Myron to help locate her little sister who she believes is still alive. Soon the sisters' father, and Kathy's ex-roommate turn up dead. The story is a multi-plotted page turner that keeps the reader on his toes. The ending is typical Coben—lengthy and perplexing. Deal Breaker is an action packed great starter for the Bolitar series. I give the novel a strong 4-star rating.

Great series...start here!

I started reading this series with the last book, loved it so much that I bought the first 9 or 10 and am working my way through. It isn't absolutely necessary to read all the books or to read them in order , but there is a continuous thread , and I wanted to follow the stories of the characters who are in Myron's life. Great, fast moving stories with interesting plots. Murders and very funny lines. I highly recommend.

Satisfying like hamburger, but not filet

So I'll start the review by saying I've already bought the next book in the series. This one was fun, with enough twists and complications to keep me turning the pages. (Well, swiping the screen, anyway...) The characters were predictable, behaving pretty much the way their caricatures would behave. And that's my only real complaint about the book. They were too simplistic, too predictable. The hero is the stereotyped wise-cracking private eye -- I mean "sports agent"-- and problems get solved thru convenient little accidents or nearly cliched verbal repartee. But hey, the plot was interesting throughout, it moved quickly, and the final twist caught me by surprise. (Usually I know whodunit early on -- this one got me.) So I'm looking forward to episode two, knowing it likely won't be a masterpiece, but should be an enjoyable escape.

About the Author
P. Anastasia is the author of the YA urban sci-fi book series Fluorescence and several forthcoming fantasy-fiction novels.

Writing has always been her passion, and she began attempting to write her first novel at age 11. While working toward her college degree, she wrote news and editorial columns as well as designed graphics for two different campus newspapers. After graduating with a degree in Communications, she followed her heart back to her publishing aspirations with her debut series, Fluorescence. When a dying race of aliens chooses to implant their own glowing DNA into a group of teenagers, things are bound to get strange. And that's exactly what happens to Alice and her friends. As if high school, puberty, and introducing your mom to your first boyfriend weren't hard enough, Alice now has to juggle a sporadically glowing patch of alien DNA on her shoulder. That alone might be manageable, but the aliens who put it there want Alice to do more than just play hostess to their genes; something they failed to mention to her.

Fire Starter is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The characters are easily relatable, and the protagonist, Alice, manages to come across as a genuine teenage girl, while still portraying enough maturity to make her appealing to an older audience too. Anastasia has given each character a unique voice, allowing them to stand out in the group. Given the nature of the series to come (each book narrated by a different character) Fire Starter sets up a strong cast, and leads the way for powerful series.

Fire Starter is a great blend of urban YA with science fiction. One does not need to be an avid sci-fi fan to find it enjoyable. The story gets off to a slow start, as the characters and their world are introduced, but really picks up the pace once it becomes apparent that a dying alien race is meddling in their lives, and wants something more from the kids than they may be willing to give. The end will leave you hanging out for book 2.

Impressive Work!

I am a member of the Baby Boomer generation and had never read a book from the category of Young Adult prior to this one. I was not certain it would hold my interest, but I was definitely mistaken about that. It was not only a great read, but one that has left me looking forward to Book 2. Congratulations to the author on an impressive first novel!

Fluorescence: Fire Starter is the first book in the Fluorescence series written by P. Anastasia. The book's mainly about the fluorescence ones--much like the chosen ones. The story follows Alice and Brian's adventure discovering what's really happening—along with the third fluorescence ones. Aliens have given them a DNA to preserve their race. As they discover the secrets beyond the glowing light beneath, their life started to change. Will it affect their future? Is there anything to be worried about? What's the real intention of the saviors?

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars! It's a great and easy read. If you like young adult sci-fi, then this book's definitely for you.

The story's a little fast at first but it gets intense as the story goes on. The secrets make it better. The writing style isn't boring. The characters are very interesting.. Specially Brian. If you already read the host by Stephenie Meyer and you loved it, well, this is a great book the same as Meyer's. Try this book out! It's worth the money and time.

The plot twist at the end really shocked me! I was reading this book at the mall while waiting for my dad then suddenly it happened. I was unable to continue it as expected ‘cause the twists were still processing. It’s so unbelievable—so unique!

So, yes! I'll end this review with a compliment because I really love the idea or the concept used. It's very original.. Though the plot may seem common, but the writing style's unique. Plus that the book has a good cover. That's a plus point for a sci-fi book, you know?

How little we knew

I grew up in Irvington and went to school with the daughter of one of the top men of this family. We had no idea what her family's secret life was until it hit the newspapers in the 70's. We were all shocked. We were in this person's home and in the home of her cousin in Vailsburg and spent countless hours together sleeping over each other's houses. I didn't read this book until I was an adult and the book had been out for a year or so. Certainly, none of the graphic details of this book made it into the Irvington Herald or the Newark Star Ledger. Yes, it's graphic and I find the person a complete coward for spilling his guts in order to go into the witness protection program. He is a cold blooded murderer and should have been given no lenience whatsoever. He made the papers some time ago for supposedly attempting to run for some type of government office where he lived. Not only did I know this family, but the two men with the same first name but different color last names were acquaintances of my father. I never knew this until I was an adult with children of my own. He told me stories that made the hairs on my neck stand up. My sympathies go to my friend who went through terrible scrutiny for something she had nothing to do with. She was an innocent child and teenager. After she divorced, she kept her married name because she did not want to face the embarrassment of carrying a name that had such horrid memories. This book is extremely graphic and shows you exactly the type ruthless, cold blooded people they truly are. Anyone who glorifies organized crime should read this book.

I REMEMBER THE STORIES !!!!

I grew up in Irvington, NJ and knew most of the people in this book. Everyone was related to someone back then. Even my mom's hairdresser is the wife of one of the men. This book, although upsetting, brings back memories....good, bad and indifferent. I have read this book 4 times at different stages of my life and STILL find it fascinating. Ira Peznick, the man who tells the story (the one who rats them out) did it all for his OWN profit. He was a murderer just the same as those he squealed on yet he gets protection!! Go figure!! The book is True, the people are REAL, the places are CORRECT, the memories still HAUNT. The families still feel SHAME....I KNOW!! The stories have been passed down over the years and the men involved, (if not dead already) still feel remorse. All those from NEWARK, IRVINGTON, BELLEVILLE, THE ORANGES, and NEW JERSEY IN GENERAL SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!
