Deserves to Be Remembered and Is Still Somewhat Suitable to Learn From
By Joseph Campagnolo
Max Born was the first to give the probability interpretation to the Schrodinger model, and this book is, besides being still in many ways an excellent introduction to elementary chemistry and physics, an important historical contribution to scientific pedagogy. It is imaginative and stimulating. I have the first Dover edition (1951), an over-sized paperback, with the "flip films" printed along the left and right margins. I am not sure if they are in other editions -- or of their quality; I would imagine they would be well depicted in all others. Like Gamow's "1,2 3, ... Infinity" and Eddington's "Space, Time and Gravitation" it deserves to be preserved although there have been advances in the sciences and newer methods of presentation have been developed since their publication. Born's book is entirely suitable summer reading for an interested high-school student before taking chemistry, but he or she should also glance through the textbook. In many ways Restless Universe will be much better reading than the modern textbook, but one had better know what the modern periodic table looks like also and be aware of the gaps. It was written in an era when students and the general public were not assumed to be innumerate dim-wits: The math will not be, however, too difficult for the reasonably educated person. For the person who is interested in the scientific history, it is interesting to see how some scientific data has changed since this edition.

Straight from the horse's mouth
By Metallurgist
Max Born was one of the prime movers in the development of quantum mechanics. He also produced several books for a general audience, and this is one of them. It was written in 1936, with a postscript chapter that tries to bring things a bit more up to date (at least to 1951 when this Dover edition was first published). One of the most interesting features of this book is the inclusion of seven "flip books", which are included in the margins of most pages. By flipping the pages one can see the motion of atoms, operation of a Hertzian oscillator, the scattering of a particles, the motion of electrons in H atoms, and the rotation of orbital planes.

The book begins with the kinetic theory of gases and uses this to develop the general concepts of Newtonian mechanics and thermodynamics. This treatment is devoid of mathematics and is a great introduction to physics, written for a general audiences, but with insights that physicists may also find interesting. It is suitable for high school students and non-science major college students. The book then proceeds to two chapters that cover electrons and ions, and waves and particles. These chapters cover the fundamentals of relativity theory and quantum mechanics. Again the treatment here is quite general and non-mathematical. These sections are still quite relevant even after 70 years, but after these chapters the book starts to show its age.

The final two chapters of the book deal with the structure of the atom and nuclear physics (circa 1936). The structure of the atom chapter gives a very nice overview of the development of the Bohr atom, with the modifications made by Sommerfeld, Pauli and Dirac. It covers the development of quantum numbers, electron orbits, and how this explains the observed atomic spectra. This chapter is probably of more interest to physicists than for a general audience, but it is explained well and is not too complex, so someone without a physics background should not become completely lost. The final chapter covers nuclear physics, primarily isotopes. Nuclear physics has advanced so much since 1951 that this chapter is mostly only of historical interest. After the material covered in the original 1936 book there is a brief postscript chapter trying to bring things up to 1951. This chapter is very general, and while it briefly mentions some advances in quantum electro dynamics, these references are very general and are mostly of historical interest. The rest of this postscript is really just historical, dealing with topics such as the impact of science on WWII (mostly the atomic bomb, but since the author was not actually involved with this work it is extremely general and very superficial).

This is a great book for a high school student interested in science. Those interested in the history of science and old science books will also like this book as it is a classic, written by a master.

Max Born's Restless Universe
By Lawrence W. Skarin
A classic Dover edition that uses page margins to create flip books of physical phenomena like kinetic theory of gases.

After another classic (The Mechanical Universe) that used animations (by James Blinn of NASA), physics is much better understood. But Born did this back in 1936. Good show, Max!

one of the definitive books on cult films.
By Cubist
This is one of the first serious film books I ever picked up. The picture of ol' Jack Nance from David Lynch's Eraserhead is what caught my eye. After reading the first paragraph of the first chapter, I was hooked.
Written by, arguably, the two best critics around -- J. Hoberman (who writes for the Village Voice) and Jonathan Rosenbaum (who writes for the Chicago Reader) -- this is an excellent look at a bygone era of movie-going. They document the midnight movie circuit that used to exist across the country for films too weird and strange for mainstream consumption. Sadly, most of these theatres are gone now -- swallowed up by the multiplex monster.
These guys clearly did their homework -- their chapters on the early careers of Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, John Waters and George Romero are definitive. Best of all, their writing style is never dry or academic but very readable (it helps that these guys write for weeklies).
This book is a must-have for any fan of cult movies (and esp. the above mentioned directors). I have read it many, many times and it inspired me to be a writer myself. Great stuff.

A Great Book on Cult Films
By The Czar of Arkansas
Long, long ago, in the age before the videocassette and enormous theater chains, a strange cultural phenomenon once existed: the midnight movie. Movies that either couldn't get a regular run or had gotten one and bombed were often exhibited at midnight in independent theaters to audiences craving a different experience. Jonathan Rosenbaum and J. Hoberman explore this all-but-extinct cinematic experience in Midnight Movies.

Midnight Movies begins with an exploration of the beginning of the midnight phenomenon, harkening back to the 40's and 50's cult and exploitation films which gave rise to the art films of the 1960's. Films from Jack Smith, Luis Bunel, Hershell Gordon Lewis, and Andy Warhol are discussed. Many of these films, while unimportant on their own, pushed boundaries and proved that a small commercial market existed for off-beat cinema. Midnight Movies then moves on to explore the impact on film and audiences of four midnight offerings: Alexandro Jodorowsky's El Topo, George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, John Waters' Pink Flamingos, and David Lynch's Eraserhead.

Jodorowsky's El Topo was perhaps the first major midnight movie, playing for weeks at midnight in various New York venues. El Topo begins as a western, although the film gets more surreal and philosophical as each reel is spun. The film chronicles the story of a gunfighter who must kill four master sharpshooters to prove his love for a girl he snatches from one of his victims. As strange as it is oddly religious, El Topo was a sensation that attracted a superstar audience for this Mexican import.

Far from Mexico--in the exotic locales of western Pennsylvania--the next midnight sensation was under construction. George Romero, while working for an ad agency, began shooting Night of the Living Dead. The entire film cost $114,000, most of which was deferred until after distribution, and grossed millions, making Night of the Living Dead the most profitable film ever released until The Blair Witch Project. Romero was influenced by B-movies and sci-fi/horror comics of the 50's, but denies that Night of the Living Dead was ever made to make the many social points later attributed to it by critics. However, the film lives on as a landmark horror film.

If critics endlessly debated the social gravity of Night of the Living Dead, they didn't waste much breath on the work of John Waters. Dedicated to bad taste, Waters' Pink Flamingos comes in for the next examination. A film about two families competing for the title of "filthiest family in the world," Pink Flamingos has something to disgust or offend nearly everyone: crossdressing, kidnapping, adult babies, gratuitous violence, homosexuality, illicit baby farms, and porn, just to name a few. Waters' work, which has clearly evolved over the years, was loved by midnight audiences for its outrageousness and lack of pretension.

Whatever pretension Waters lacked was more than made up by the book's final director and film, David Lynch's Eraserhead. Eraserhead is the nonnarrative story of Henry, who wanders through a postmodern industrial wasteland. Henry is contacted by an old girlfriend, Mary, who claims to have given birth to Henry's child. The baby, if it can be scientifically called that, is a complete grotesquerie, which Mary abandons to Henry's care while Henry daydreams about a woman who lives in his apartment's radiator. Eraserhead really can't be adequately explained, it can only be experienced. Like the far more commercial Altered States, it is a nihilistic journey probably best taken with some chemical substance. Its billing as a "nightmare vision of the future" was right on target, at least for Lynch's future: Lynch continues to get paid by big studios in the bleak hope he'll make another Elephant Man, when he really just makes very slick versions of Eraserhead.

If you're a film junkie, this book is really a must-read. Hoberman and Rosenbaum do an excellent job of discussing the making of each film, the personalities involved, and the cultural climate into which each film was released. Although the opening sections concerning underground film in the 40's and 50's were a bit long, in my opinion, the reader gets a great story not merely of how these films were made and distributed, but how audiences and fans experienced these midnight movies.

A CULT CLASSIC IN ITSELF!
By DrSpecter
A lot of these directors have had entire books written about them since this book was published, but the authors manage to make this book so entertaining and fascinating that I've reread it twice-- I usually just read nonfiction once and then use it for reference. If they would put England's The Incredibly Strange Film Show (and the spin-offs Son Of... and For One Week Only)out on DVD, it would rival this book. Until then, this is the most vital source of information on cult movies.

Great Book on All Aspects of Led Zeppelin
By TubaMan
This is perhaps the best book that explains Led Zeppelin completely: their music, their manager, their tours, their behavior, and the reasons why they did things the way they did them. Mr. Hoskyns put this book together by collecting statements from many people associated with Led Zeppelin, including the band, its employees, its groupies, other rock musicians, and arranging them in chronological order. I started reading while skeptical about the format, but I saw the quality of this "oral history" format the more I read.

Led Zeppelin - When dinosaurs ruled the earth.
By Red on Black
Led Zeppelin bestrode the 70s rock world like a colossus and perhaps it is right that any book about them should have equally epic proportions. This latest "reveal" by Barney Hoskyns sometimes borders on the obsessional yet for Zeppelin aficionados it is a hugely welcome addition to the bands colorful history from a first class rock journalist who has previously taken on such luminaries as The Band and Tom Waits. In another setting he also charts the rise of fall of the cocaine cowboys of Laurel Canyon scene in "Hotel California". His new book "Trampled Under Foot: The Power and Excess of Led Zeppelin" does revisit some of the themes of the latter book since it is the city of Los Angeles which casts a huge shadow over proceedings as the "default" base for Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham during their all conquering American Tours. This witnessed them take residency in the legendary "Riot House" (Continental Hyatt House) on Sunset Strip where they occupied the top floor of the hotel and created a modern day bacchanalia. Their infamous and lurid excesses has formed the basis for previous books not least Stephen Davis "Hammer of the Gods" a tale of a band "drenched in sex, drugs and psychic abuse". In truth Davis relied much on the wild and often-unreliable recollections of tour manager Richard Cole whose later "Stairway to Heaven" repeated much of what had already been published. Clearly while Cole was an untrustworthy witness he was at the heart of the Zeppelin juggernaut particularly with his friendship to the brilliant but often brutish Jon Bonham. Hence the protestations of Jimmy Page and other band members about his "ridiculously false" account may fall into the "me thinks they doth protest to much" category. Whatever the case it evident that the more mature ex Led Zep members have been keen to put considerable distance between their former hellraiser exploits and current status as Grammy winning wizened old bluesmen.

Hoskyns book draws on a much wider evidential base and attempts to get to the heart of the matter by extensive interviews of over 200 people producing what is the definitive oral history of the band. Hoskyns stated purpose was to peel away the myths and legends. As he states most existing books "recycle tales of groupies and mudsharks and chucking TV sets out of windows. For me, this is terribly boring. I wanted to demystify the band". And yet the reality does not allow a complete revision for as he states "at the same time, I uncovered stuff that's even more shocking". These include the fact that the Zeppelin machine constructed by Peter Grant was so big and powerful that it was virtually above the the law" and could "pay our way out of any trouble, any scandal'. In the last analysis however is this a great shock to any Led Zeppelin fan? They came at a time when the a new and aggressive breed of British managers fought tooth and nail for their artists including through physical violence. They were an "albums" band in a pre internet/download area when record sales were stratospheric and money almost unlimited. They conquered the US at the time in terms of tours and album sales which the Beatles could only dream of. But most of all they were the most exciting thing on the planet in terms of rock music, despite the derision of nearly every rock critic at the time including Hoskyns house magazine the NME.

In the last analysis if you love Zeppelin you will adore "Trampled Underfoot". It is brilliantly written (if a tad long) and charts the story of a singularly unique band of brilliant young musicians with the world at their feet, woman on every arm and unassailable repertoire of hard rock and metallic funk. In short if you own "Physical Graffiti" buy it. For the curious Hoskyns does an interesting list of his top Zeppelin songs marked by the absence of the "usual suspects". Here is his top 15 (No Stairway!) -

1. Ramble On' (Led Zeppelin II)
2. The Lemon Song' (Led Zeppelin II)
3. `Friends' (Led Zeppelin III)
4. `The Ocean' (Houses of the Holy)
5. `Bring It On Home' (Led Zeppelin II).
6. `Gallows Pole' (Led Zeppelin III)
7. `Over the Hills and Far Away' (Houses of the Holy)
8. `Communication Breakdown' (Led Zeppelin)
9. `Black Dog' (Led Zeppelin IV)
10. `Kashmir' (Physical Graffiti)
11. `Since I've Been Loving You' (Led Zeppelin III)
12. `In My Time of Dying' (Physical Graffiti)
13. `Immigrant Song' (Led Zeppelin III)
14. `The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair' (BBC Sessions)
15. `Whole Lotta Love' (Led Zeppelin II)

What do you think? (Personally "Since I've been loving you" would top my list)

Appropriate Title for an Awesome Book!
By Erik Epperson
I've read everything I could get my hands on and this book was no exception. What surprised me at first was the way it was written. The book is made up of quotes and exerts from different people all throughout the Zeppelin World, and placed in chronological order. I wasn't a fan at first, but I quickly realized that each quote gave the perspective of that individual without being dramatized by an author. Instead of the book being persuasive and opinionated from one view, it offers several different views of events that occurred in the Zeppelin world.
I personally found this even more interesting. Instead of a "he said, she said", the quotes come from out of the horses mouths. I think it's great the band has had that mystique about them from tier inception and continues to gain new generations of fans. This book was a great read for the fans who want to get a little deeper into their world. Quotes come from groupies, engineers, managers, record label executives, other musicians as well as the band themselves. I found the book fascinating, but at the same time didn't really learn anything new. It re-emphasizes the fact that John Bonham was really respected throughout the music community, but equally feared for his hard-partying ways and how Jimmy Page was the mastermind behind the helm. John Paul Jones was the most underated musician basically building the groove behind Page, while Robert Plant brought that Black Country Middle-Earthness to the band. Led Zeppelin Rules! What a great time for this book to come out a month before the O2 reunion release on Blu-ray!

at first i didn't want anything to do with it
By MiCROjOY
everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so, this is in no way hostile to other reviewers. I used to read comics as a kid, especially wolverine, and now i'm in my 30's and back into them big time. i stumbled into the best comic store in richmond, va and was blown away by the art and the intellegent story lines of todays comics. Since then i have gotten a lot of the newer wolverine graphic novels. i was really not into anything about these origins books or the art, to be honest..for some reason i thought it looked like cheap and generic or something. Then i found that i really like the artwork 'dillon' does for the current jason aaron punisher run, which made me more interested in checking out daniel way's origins. i finally got origins 1 and now i'm hooked. Reviews do help when looking to find something worth while, but, in the end, everybody has their own taste and opinion so don't look over something to quick that you might like.

Save it
By Sam Quixote
Logan discovers he has a son called Daken who is hell bent on destruction and vows to stop him. Except Daken has inherited his father's famous healing factor and the only thing that can make a difference is the material carbonadium, a rare substance that can only be synthesized using one small machine - which Logan has stashed in Berlin. The race is on as Logan, Daken and the evil mutant Omega Red head for the prize.

I like this series and the character of Daken but this second volume is not the strongest in the series - it's basically all about the final few pages launching the story into the excellent third volume "Swift and Terrible". But Daniel Way's characterisation remains spot on while Steve Dillon's art is fantastic as always.

I think this book is a bit dull because of the various plot threads that don't really go anywhere. Jubilee as hostage went nowhere, the Black Widow showing up was also pointless as was her side story from when she was a kid who met Logan for the first time, and the SHIELD side story ended abruptly at the same time as the Omega Red story.

All this book really sets up for the rest of the series is that there is a material that can permanently kill Logan and that Daken, angry young man that he is, wants it so he can bond it to his exoskeleton and kill his dad. "Savior" is an overlong part of the series that is largely unnecessary - only Wolverine/Daken fans would really want to read this for completion's sake.

Good but not great.
By J Gent
The Origins:series is based off of the idea that Wolverine has remembered all of his past, which is a great concept. I think the storyline moves a little slow to get to the point and the art is very lackluster and subpar. I feel like I am watching Saturday morning cartoons from the 90's that really really suck and went cheap on the budget. Also they probably could have narrowed down the length to get to the point instead of draggin on the end. If you decide to continue on with the series after this it is much of the same with more questions. I say borrow a friends copy to read but keeping it is just not worth the effort or cost. I think I read it in 15 minutes which is pretty pathetic for a trade.

Overall:Awesome cover art, poor interior art and ok dialog and narrative. It makes me wish that they would just start reprinting the Wolverine: Originals from 'Marvel Presents'. Apparently those days of great art inside and out and amazing story telling are gone for this series. Too bad.

The Third Reich Sourcebook (Weimar and Now: German Cultural Criticism), by Anson Rabinbach, Sander L. Gilman

No documentation of National Socialism can be undertaken without the explicit recognition that the “German Renaissance” promised by the Nazis culminated in unprecedented horror—World War II and the genocide of European Jewry. With The Third Reich Sourcebook, editors Anson Rabinbach and Sander L. Gilman present a comprehensive collection of newly translated documents drawn from wide-ranging primary sources, documenting both the official and unofficial cultures of National Socialist Germany from its inception to its defeat and collapse in 1945. Framed with introductions and annotations by the editors, the documents presented here include official government and party pronouncements, texts produced within Nazi structures, such as the official Jewish Cultural League, as well as documents detailing the impact of the horrors of National Socialism on those who fell prey to the regime, especially Jews and the handicapped. With thirty chapters on ideology, politics, law, society, cultural policy, the fine arts, high and popular culture, science and medicine, sexuality, education, and other topics, The Third Reich Sourcebook is the ultimate collection of primary sources on Nazi Germany.

Review
"Essential. No library, whether public or academic, should be without this remarkable resource." (CHOICE 2014-10-01)

From the Inside Flap
“An absolutely magnificent achievement. After the mountain of books that have been published on Nazism, it can seem implausible that there is still more to learn. This brilliantly conceived collection of primary documents shows that there is indeed more – much more. No prior anthology or analysis does nearly so much to help readers enter the emotional landscape of the Third Reich, so as to understand better the at once savage and subtle ideological work that made the regime so terrifyingly successful.” —Dagmar Herzog, Graduate Center, City University of New York

“The indispensable collection of texts from the Third Reich in this extraordinary volume gives readers first-hand knowledge of the transformation of life in Nazi Germany into a racist state and culture. In this most important single volume for understanding German society under Hitler, Rabinbach and Gilman document the racial hatred and violence that transformed all aspects of life into a Nazi society: law, politics, culture, science, religion, education, sexuality, marriage, childrearing, sports, the arts, concentration camps, that finally led to World War II and the murder of the Jews.”—Professor Susannah Heschel, author of The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany

“No other topic provides a deeper insight into Nazism's mobilizing ambiguity then its attitude towards America as modernity's hothouse. The Reader contains an excellent collection for that query.”—Dan Diner, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem/ The Simon Dubnow Institute, Leipzig University

About the Author
Anson Rabinbach is professor of history at Princeton University, founder and co-editor of New German Critique, and author of several books, including In the Shadow of Catastrophe: German Intellectuals Between Apocalypse and Enlightenment.

Authoritative and Indispensable
By Matt Obenritter
Few books encapsulate the many facets of Nazi Germany like this formidable tome. Using primary source documents and expert historical analysis, this work is broken down into 12 distinct chapters to give the layman, student, and/or scholar of the Third Reich an excellent overview and in many cases, a thorough understanding of this dark and destructive chapter of German history. One is hard-pressed to find a more judicious choice of documents or a better application of historical expertise over the Third Reich than this. If you are truly interested in Nazi Germany - you must purchase this impressive work.

Outstanding, But Not Quite Definitive
By Roland Spickermann
This is truly an impressive collection, to which the only thing comparable is Noakes's four-volume collection of documents *Nazism 1919-1945*. Nonetheless, it does still have gaps, mainly with regard to everyday life in wartime, and especially for 1944-1945. Descriptions of the experience and impact of aerial bombardment, for example, are lacking. Likewise, the descriptions of the last terrifying months of the war and the first encounters with Americans and Soviets, when the war literally came home, are missing. There is no mention here of the treks of German refugees/expellees from the eastern territories. All of these involve the experiences of millions of Germans; the sheer numbers of people involved would make these experiences essential for a fuller understanding of the Third Reich and of its longer-term impact on Germany... but they get almost no attention in this volume. Defeat is covered only through the inclusion of Hitler's Last Will and Testament. If one (rightfully) includes selections about, for example, Nazi conceptions of architecture, then surely these also merit inclusion. It is indeed an outstanding work, in all, but still falls short of being definitive. I would give this work 4.5 stars, if I could, but must choose to give it four rather than five.
