Covers Span from OOD Basics to Design Patterns

This is a great textbook that covers Object-Oriented Design from basic practices through many common design patterns from the Gang of Four. It can be used by any student who has completed a data structures course.

Design problems are introduced well, along with iteratively-better solutions, all presented clearly. Heuristics for good design are scattered throughout as Guidelines, each easy to find in the text and described with relevant context. Solid examples are given showing the benefit of each guideline and solution. In later chapters, many OO design patterns are fully described, in easy-to-follow language. (It is not necessary to be familiar with the GoF/Design Patterns notation.)

Although the code examples are restricted to Java, the guidelines are relevant to any OO language. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to employ good OOD.

It's Probably A Better Textbook Than My Rating Suggests

I used this text for an Object-Oriented Design class and found it to be a dreary, sloggy read. At least part of the problem is that the author assumes a familiarity with Java and our program doesn't teach Java until you get to this class. I just think there has to be a more user-friendly way of sharing the concepts, guidelines, and patterns of object-oriented design.

International Version!! Careful

For those wishing to save a few bucks off the hardcover, be careful! The paperback is an International Version. On the back it states clearly: "This International Edition is not to be sold or purchased in North America and contains content that is different from its North American version." I have not compared it to the hardcover yet but immediately I can say the pages are super thin and glossy, almost like magazine pages.

I had the privilege of being selected as a Technical Reviewer for this book. All to often over the course of my Oracle DBA career, I see questions on various forums asking about different upgrade and migration procedures. Some questions have obvious answers such as read the Oracle Upgrade Guide for your version. Other questions aren't as easy, like how to I migrate to ASM (see Chapter 6 of this book) or how do I upgrade when I have a standby database in place (discussed in Chapter 8). This book makes it easy to understand how to migrate from one OS to another. My personal favorite chapter was the one discussing Database Downgrades (Chapter 13). I once asked on the My Oracle Support Communities how many people have actually practiced a database downgrade and hardly anyone that responded to the poll has done so. If you want to ensure zero data loss a period time after you upgraded (like 1 week or 1 month or more), then you need to know how to downgrade the database. This book is a great find for any Oracle DBA that needs to upgrade or migrate their databases. Even if your databases are all currently at the latest/greatest release, this book is still vital for your career down the road. At some point in the future you will need to upgrade to Oracle 13c or 14c or migrate from one OS to another.

Such fun to read :)

As an owner of two Pugs (and I think they deserve a capital letter), I've thoroughly enjoyed Gemma Correll's two Pug-themed books. The first is called 'A Pug's Guide to Etiquette', and the latest is 'A Pug's Guide to Dating.' I can see a whole series taking shape, and that'd be wonderful. I know Violet and Daisy would appreciate that.

Gemma's illustrations are adorable, and besides her drawings, the dialogue is hilarious. Truly, when I read her books, I tend to look over at our Pugs, frown and then nod my head, agreeing that they do indeed all act alike. From smelling a bit dusty, to snoring and licking the floor (no matter what the surface happens to be), Pugs are a breed apart. But my eyes have been opened in regards to their attitudes toward dating.

For any Pug owner, these are a delight to read and re-read. Hint: Keep the books in handy reach of your own Pugs, so that they can refer to them frequently.

A Must Have for Anyone Who Has Ever Loved a Pug

I discovered Gemma Correll while looking for inspiration for a memorial tattoo for my Pug. Gemma has captured the spirit of the Pug and has managed to epitomize the cuteness that is the Pug. When I found out she was publishing a book about Pugs, I knew I had to have it and my husband bought me her first Pug book - "A Pug's Guide to Etiquette" for Valentine's day (though Amazon had some issues and it took 3-4 months EXTRA for me to get my book, past the original date they promised me). It was as adorable as I expected, and when I heard Gemma was going to have a 2nd Pug book, I knew I had to have that book as well.

Just like her first Pug book, I found this book to be adorable and amusing. If you know anyone who lives with Pugs, who wants to live with Pugs, who loves Pugs, who laughs at Pugs, you have to get Gemma's books for them. If you don't like Gemma's Pug books, then you don't like Pugs, and we probably can't be friends.

A cute book for Pug Lovers

Gemma Correll has done some very nice things regarding pugs. This is a cute little book simply highlights some of the wacky things pugs do to make their owners love them so much. It's short and sweet with charming illustrations.
This book would be good for children or grown pug enthusiasts. I leave it on a side table to let guests poke through.

Highly recommended!

This book appealed to me because it offered a long and detailed history of Japan. It really jumped into the History and I liked that we had a good time span that stretched from the end of WWII to a more recent year, 2010. I am working on a project that describes the Sexualization of Young Girls in the Idol; industry in Japan, and this book was able to give a decent history of the mindset of the Japanese, and just generally explained what was in the minds of the Japanese during different intervals of time. The description of the book was detailed, and told me exactly what I had to look forward to while reading this book. This site included the detailed description so I did not need to look elsewhere to see if this was the book that could help me with my project. The book was well written and was a smooth read. I did not need to look elsewhere for information since this book had what I needed, back history.
