As you sit in your chair, reading this manuscript, have you ever stopped for a moment to ponder the route that energy takes in getting to your home? Have you ever wondered how the power sources that are connected to your home have changed in the last 20, 50 or 500 years? If you’re like most people, these questions may have briefly arisen in your mind but you do not yet have all of the answers. You have yet to become energy literate!
To fully understand the production, distribution and consumption of energy it is necessary to have at least a qualitative understanding of various technical, environmental, financial, legal and governmental factors. I used the word qualitative in the previous sentence to allude to the fact that it is not necessary to be an engineer, lawyer or accountant to be energy literate. Energy literacy is within the grasp of the layman!

From Publishers Weekly
Garber (Sex and Real Estate), "a Shakespearean by training and a critic of contemporary culture by predilection," offers an eclectic collection of scholarly essays on the power and importance of language. She examines the moments when language breaks down, leading to dissension and conflict, and insists that "no matter how unexpected its authorities, how multiple and contradictory its associations, and how circuitous its path to meaning," language must be taken seriously. The 14 essays move freely between the most insipid aspects of modern culture (like the obsession with Monica Lewinsky's lip gloss) and the Big Questions of `Who am I?' and `What am I doing here?' In "Vegetable Love," for example, Garber looks at paintings of vegetables to show how they convey sexuality. The analysis is light-hearted and witty ("These peppers are having a good time"), but Garber ultimately treats the issue as profoundly political, because, she argues, how we read sex and gender is one of the key steps for changing social ideas. In "The Jane Austen Syndrome" she celebrates Austen's presence in modern culture but laments the increasingly minor place her novels have in the larger scheme of things. And, in the final essay, she urges humanists to write openly about "human nature" and defends the aesthetic, interpretive, philosophical and intellectual activities of the humanities. Garber's style is rather schizophrenic, at times hilariously funny and based in personal narrative, at other times profoundly serious and firmly entrenched in the thorny jargon of Derrida, Barthes and other theorists. The book does not always answer its most pressing questions, but it's a useful prod to other critics who just might take them up. 8 pages of color illus.

From Library Journal
The nature of quotations, fashion, work, sequels, sexuality, the abbreviation Ms., Monica Lewinsky, textural editing in Shakespeare, literature, and human nature are all discussed in this widely varied group of essays by Garber (English, Harvard; Sex and Real Estate). Garber is especially discerning in her exploration of the media's failure to discuss Lewinsky's Jewishness, paintings of vegetables and their sexual symbolism, and the relationship between literary criticism and cultural studies, and her close reading of Shakespeare includes a fine understanding of how editing has continually adapted the meaning of the literature for each generation. Exploring the worlds of literature, language, and history and proving open to contemporary experience, she invites the reader to appreciate the complexity of modern life. Garber's evenhanded, friendly tone makes this an erudite and absorbing introduction to the art of the essay and present-day literary thought. Recommended for literature collections.

Shimmying philosopher, or Le style c'est la femme
By Simon Barrett 'Il Penseroso'
This is a ragbag of 'think-pieces', from the scintillating (Garber as art critic) to the irritating (structuralism as the new Scholasticism, with Garber helpfully explaining that to be nonsensical is 'to create *non-sense*') to the pedestrian (Shakespeare - her specialism! - and the Janeites) in a direct line of descent from Against Interpretation.

You can't not like Garber - she finds adding 'Of' to the title of her presentations 'adds a certain clarity' ('Of Jell-O' rather than 'Jell-O', anyone?) and she scintillates where Sontag glowers - BUT - she's mighty skeered of French! She nowhere gives us Barthes' Systme de la Mode's French title (she calls it his tour de force - does she mean his chef d'oeuvre?) and has him saying, mediated by Stephen Heath, that the work is the imaginary tail of the text. Now 'queue'(tail) may work in French (aboutissement?) but in English a less concrete equivalence is required - excrescence, appanage, appendage? At least the French would help us form our own judgement. Before the letter rather than avant la lettre was also a new one on me, though later on she takes the plunge. As for Garber's gloss on Buffon, I'm afraid le style c'est l'homme meme does *not* mean style is man himself (that would be lui-meme); what Buffon meant by the phrase was 'style is what makes us human' but nowadays we take it to mean 'the style is the man' (see David Bellos: Is That a Fish in Your Ear? for the shift)

I don't want to labour the point - well OK, I do, such fine distinctions being meat and drink to a semiotician like Garber, in this respect recalling our own dear demented dylanologist Sir Christopher Ricks (nice but dotty), but when she's wearing her social-historian-cum-philosopher-cum-philologist hat she's very, very entertaining. There's no headword for sport in the index, but page 62 is a delight; that tawdry tramp Monica Lewinsky gets more column inches than she's ever had in her life; and in her art critic's hat Garber kicks up a storm. Her piece on compassion is worthy of the master Geoffrey Nunberg but those on the Janeites and on character (Fatal Cleopatra) dully populist (why so coy about listing original appearances? even Plath wrote for Mademoiselle!) and not even she can inject life into the bones of fusty Shakespeare scholars, one of whom even wrote a book called Shakespeare's Bones: The Proposal to Disinter Them. Unless there's some irony that escapes me, this is the sound of old men missing the point; is it their Englishness or merely their unfashionableness that attracts Garber? Though Thomas Boston's Human Nature in its Four Fold State of Primitive Integrity, Entire Depravity, Begun Recovery and Consummate Happiness or Misery sounds like a page-turner. As for the worrying misuse of the term meretricious on p208... can she suppose it means meritoriously delicious? Rather the opposite, I'm afraid. Is sly or subversive perhaps the sense she is after, that of being something while appearing to be something else? For someone so keen on etymology this is a surprising lapse. But at least they've actually graced her, unlike Sontag, with an index

The politicalization of Culture (and every thing else)
By Michael Jay Sullivan
There are at least 2 Margery Garbers: the highly innovative and esteemed
Shakespearian scholar; and the far left, somewhat superficial, cultural
critic espousing anti-totalitarian totalitarian totalitarianism. This book and her other works on Cultural Studies are superficial, dogmatic, and, imo, a general waste of time compared to her cultural studies forebearers and contemporaries (people like Judith Butler, Stuart Hall, Lawrence Grossberg, Doug Kellner, Raymond Williams..). Having sat in on a few of her classes years back I found her to be a pompous elitist, and a very rigid and radical feminist in a largely post feminist age (i. e. most of early feminist's goals have been achieved). What is worst I feel that there is subtle element of political/cultural indoctrination running through her approach that young impressionable students fail to comprehend. There is a one dimensional element to her argument relating to culture being purely a polititicalization of a hegemonic reality; a mostly neo Marxist argument (see Frankfurt School)minus the robust earlier efforts to reach out to the working class (e. g.;Paris 68).

There is a strong ideological affinity between cultural studies and political correctness(e. g. like the emphasis on race, gender, class) which like radical feminism, has done a lot of good things for our over-mediaized, consumer crazed culture. I doubt that without the efforts of the much maligned "PC" movement we would have am authentic, dynamic black man as possibly, and hopefully, our next president, with a heroic female primary opponent waiting in the wings. Moreover, if Bush had remained popular, the next thing on his neo-fascist/neoconservative agenda would be to be to wipe out cultural studies, in particular, and critical thinking, in general. However, due to it's increasing trivialization (as represented by this and other of Garber's non scholarly works), post 9/11 paranoia, and CS's disparate, exclusionary and,at times disingenuous agenda, Cultural Studies, at least its American variant. has been dying out (see Terry Eagleton's "After Theory"). This is somewhat sad, because Cultural Studies did have some good points (particularly post colonial studies and critiques of the media and the consumer crazed culture). I do hope a slightly more moderated variant of Cultural (or Critical) Studies can take it's place. Nevertheless, I find obvious elitists as Garber carrying the banner of the dispossesd as "oxymoronic" at best; and, also, realize how far her, and some of cohorts, have strayed from the dynamism of their roots in the UK Birmingham School of Stuart Hall and the writings of Raymond Williams. There just doesn't seem to be any more praxis left in cultural studies. Nevertheless there is a "small circle of friend" who still write Cultural Studies related books and articles for each other in the academy- and maybe some of these works will have some value in a larger arena. Marjorie, for her part, should stick to Shakespeare, where she is one of the best.

Garber = Genius
By anon
To borrow from a delicious deconstructor: The intelligent ease, strength, and flexibility displayed in this book are astounding. It teaches and questions, searches and provokes, stimulates and cautions, with a sure-footedness and intellectual self-confidence that combines scholarly rigor with relaxed scandalousness. Garber is the queen - and king - of culture; and you can quote me on that!

Practice your Spanish with volcanoes and dinosaurs
By Nathan Walker
I've been listening to audio books to practice my Spanish for a while now, and I've always found Fonolibro's CDs to have great voice acting and narration. My only complaint with this one is that it was rather short (only 2 CDs, from a 250 page book), and a lot of good episodes from the book were cut. Still, if you want a simple way to practice your Spanish and listen to a classic story in the process, this is a great place to start.

Sciencie and romanticism walking each other's hand
By carlos
It's 8 years now since I first read the book. Since then i've reread it once more. What can i say about the book? it's enthralling, daring, imaginative in its vocabulary and many things more. I'm keen of adventure books but when you add exotic landscapes to accurate data you make a masterpiece. You may think the book does not deserve its 5 stars but just read the story and tell me 'du ecrivain franais'.Bye

Cities of Empire: The British Colonies and the Creation of the Urban World, by Tristram Hunt

An original history of the most enduring colonial creation, the city, explored through ten portraits of powerful urban centers the British Empire left in its wake

At its peak, the British Empire was an urban civilization of epic proportions, leaving behind a network of cities which now stand as the economic and cultural powerhouses of the twenty-first century. In a series of ten vibrant urban biographies that stretch from the shores of Puritan Boston to Dublin, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Liverpool, and beyond, acclaimed historian Tristram Hunt demonstrates that urbanism is in fact the most lasting of Britain's imperial legacies.

Combining historical scholarship, cultural criticism, and personal reportage, Hunt offers a new history of empire, excavated from architecture and infrastructure, from housing and hospitals, sewers and statues, prisons and palaces. Avoiding the binary verdict of empire as "good" or "bad," he traces the collaboration of cultures and traditions that produced these influential urban centers, the work of an army of administrators, officers, entrepreneurs, slaves, and renegades. In these ten cities, Hunt shows, we also see the changing faces of British colonial settlement: a haven for religious dissenters, a lucrative slave-trading post, a center of global hegemony.

Lively, authoritative, and eye-opening, "Cities of Empire" makes a crucial new contribution to the history of colonialism.

Review

“A lively and cliche-busting survey of imperial history… With the richness of his approach… Hunt succeeds at moving beyond ‘a barren conversation about empire being a "good" or "bad" thing' to reflect instead on how the processes of imperial exchange took place.” ―Maya Jasanoff, The Guardian (UK)

“An A+ history of empire. To chart the emergence, growth, glory, decline and fall of an empire is no mean undertaking. To write about any aspect of the British Empire is to invite controversy…. So emerg[ing] with honor intact is quite an achievement. And producing an original take on a much-visited theme is a genuine accomplishment. It is to the author's great credit that this book accomplishes all three ambitions with apparently effortless ease.” ―Michael Gove, The Times (UK)

“All too often, historians cast [the empire] as the supreme expression of Europe's moral superiority or as a uniquely wicked project to grind the wretched of the earth into the dust. But Hunt takes a more thoughtful approach. His new book shows how the British Empire actually worked on the ground.… It is distinguished not just by its vivid detail and fluent prose, but by the sheer complexity and subtlety of its arguments.” ―Dominic Sandbrook, The Sunday Times (UK)

“A well-documented, evenhanded work that will delight urban scholars and lay travelers.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Hunt succeeds in bringing his metropolises to life… A book to be enjoyed by an array of readers.” ―Library Journal

Cities As The Story of Empire
By Matthew Ries
The legacy of the economic and political practices of the growth of the British Empire and the implemented of those practices in colonial cities are at the root of Tristram Hunt’s “Cites of Empire”. Instead of looking at the British Empire as either a good or bad “thing”, Hunt examines how it grew and the impact it has on our world today while not forgetting the motivations of those who implemented the policies in the first place.

Hunt examines 10 cities connected to the spread of Britain’s empire around the world, giving each city its own exclusive chapter. While each city is given its own history, Hunt shows how the British experiences in one city affected their decisions in others he was writing about. The history of a particular city is not the only thing covered with the individuals who impacted it; Hunt gives the reader a wonderful portrait of the cultural, social, and architectural developments along with those who promoted them.

While Hunt’s descriptive writing of the architectural are wonderful, the text would have been enhanced with illustrations of some kind of the building he was describing (thought as I was reading an advanced reader’s edition of the book there might be some in for sale edition). The maps at the opening of each chapter helped to place the buildings and other geographical issues into context if one got confused for any reason. Although Hunt’s insights into the society of the cities he writes about, at times the information he writes feels like a redux of previous cities’ and so slowed my reading as thought back on previous chapters.

Upon finishing “Cities of Empire” I had a better sense of the imperial history of British colonization, a topic in history that I have personally wanting to know more about. Although not perfect, Tristram Hunt’s book gives the reader a history of the British Empire and its legacy in the 21st Century without judging or defending as good or evil. I whole recommend this book to those interested in the spread of British culture around the world.

The empire in cities, comes full circle (see the chapter on Liverpool).
By lyndonbrecht
I have some reservations about that "and the creation of the urban world" in the title. The book looks at not all cities but a number of cities which are the partial or whole creations of differing eras of the British Empire. That said, this is an extremely informative book and a compelling read. The book has an undercurrent of exploitation, the rich architecture and imperial regalia built on the backs of raw exploitation of--largely--nonwhite masses. The book notes that there were several famines in India, in which millions died, created mostly by British mismanagement, similarly to Ireland in the Famine. The book mentions this kind of thing more passing, than a theme--the book is not a polemic or a condemnation. In fact it rather admires the vigor and resilience of the British in building or rebuilding the cities.

The tour starts with the Boston Tea Party in the 1770s. Boston was a creation of trade, and one of the more important cities in the English speaking world at the time. This sets the frame for what follows. How the city was built, notable people both British and local, and brief but nicely written bits of context.

Chapter 2 in Bridgetown, in Barbados in the 1700s, creator of riches and the human misery attending the sugar industry.

City 3 is Dublin, with a lot of architecture and some Irish history, some of it rather gory.

City 4 is Capetown, in the 1800s, a colonial crossroads and way station, multicultural and not considered fully South African by some critics.

City 5 is Calcutta, and this chapter is as close to condemnatory as Hunt gets; he describes the once prosperous Bengal reduced to poverty and starvation caused by British trade policies.

City 6 is Hong Kong, outgrowth of trade with China, originally and forever evil, because it was made by forcing opium on China.

City 7 is Bombay, inherited from the Portuguese (a wedding gift as a Portuguese princess married a British king), a British creation and center of a cotton industry.

City 8 is Melbourne, based on gold. City 9 is New Delhi, then and now center of an ostentatious raj, that Hunt seems to think has seen Indian rule supplant British but not so different. City 10 is Liverpool, based on slavery (in the 1700s 5,000 slavers left Liverpool).

The book pivots on Liverpool, the end of Empire and the start of a new empire moving in--Hunt sees Liverpool as betting on Chinese trade and here the empire has come full circle, from motor of empire to entrepot for another empire.

The above may seem tedious, but it is not. This is a meaty, excellent, informative and well written book. It is given a personal touch by the author's having visited them all, and making observations of the physical traces left after empire receded.

impressive book
By Jeff Hunt
Very well written and interesting page turner. It is hard to imagine a small island off the coast of France constructing so many cities across the world and sparing no expense before the advent of steam! This author tracks the phases of empire through the history of spectacular cities that tell a linear story right through the present. I recommend this book to anyone interested in history or who lives in a former British colony.

A Warriors of Rome Story

Senator Marcus Brutus has spent his life serving Rome, but it’s difficult to be a patriot when the Republic, barely recovered from a civil war, is under threat by its own leader. Brutus’s one retreat is his country home, where he steals a few precious days now and then with Cassius, his brother-in-law and fellow soldier — and the one he loves above all others. But the sickness at the heart of Rome is spreading, and even Brutus’s nights with Cassius can’t erase the knowledge that Gaius Julius Caesar is slowly becoming a tyrant.

Cassius fears both Caesar’s intentions and Brutus’s interest in Tiresias, the villa’s newest servant. Tiresias claims to be the orphaned son of a minor noble, but his secrets run deeper, and only Brutus knows them all. Cassius, intent on protecting the Republic and his claim to Brutus, proposes a dangerous conspiracy to assassinate Caesar. After all, if Brutus — loved and respected by all — supports it, it’s not murder, just politics.

Now Brutus must return to Rome and choose: not only between Cassius and Tiresias, but between preserving the fragile status quo of Rome and killing a man who would be emperor.

Historically Thought Provoking & Romantic...
By J. Faltys
Sam Starbuck has made history fun in this steamy interpretation of the downfall of Julius Caesar. With its insightful look into characters we only know by name he succeeds in drawing us into this world and feeling compassion for those put into an untenable position.

Where before we found Brutus a bloodthirsty traitor, we now see a conflicted soul. Conflicted as to his ongoing relationship with Cassius as well as being drawn into the assassination plot. We end up feeling sympathetic towards him and relish any moments of happiness he can find. He tries to be an honorable man but gets drawn into a plan that he finds lacks honor.

His relationship with Cassius is one that remains hidden from the public but gets the tacit okay from their wives. The encounters are playful yet sexy and you can sense all the weight of the world being lifted off him at these moments. Considering how happy he makes Brutus I wish Cassius came off as more likable. He gave the impression of being a jealous child constantly prodding at Brutus to do the bloody deed he's too weak to do. That's why it was nice that Brutus was able to draw comfort from the "transgender" Tiresias. Tiresias gives unwavering support to Brutus at a time when he's doubting everything and everyone. Considering the important part she/he plays in Brutus' life I wish we'd had more insight into the character.

The City War perfectly blends historical and emotional facets into an entertaining and satisfying history lesson. The many names dispersed throughout the story does become a bit overwhelming at times but the vivid and realistic imagery fully immerses the reader into this brief glimpse into Roman life. Sam Starbuck has created an emotional and thought provoking story and I'm greatly intrigued by what he'll create for us readers next.

Excellent LGBT historical novel
By Jules Jones
Roman Senator Marcus Brutus is a patriot, devoted to the Republic. Many of his days are spent actively working for the Republic, protecting the system he believes in. His main respite is the occasional trip to his country villa in the company of his dearest friend, and lover, Cassius. But his tireless work may not be enough, not when the consul Julius Caesar is taking more and more power to himself. When Cassius first proposes a drastic solution, Brutus rejects the idea, but as the months go by, it becomes ever more obvious that given enough time, Caesar will overthrow the Republic and make himself emperor.

I bought this because I love Sam's fanfic, and expected him to do a good job of original fiction drawing on historical fact. I wasn't disappointed. This is one of those novels where I think it can be enjoyed both by readers who know nothing about the historical characters, and by readers familiar with the historical story, or with Shakespeare's play. There's a solid story here that fleshes out the basic facts and brings Brutus to life as a real person, a decent, honorable man faced with a choice between evils. His decision is not a simple one, and is made over the course of months, as more and more evidence accumulates of what Rome's future could be if Caesar is not reined in.

And it's not just Brutus who's brought to life here. There's a good exploration of Cassius and his motives. In addition, there's a brief but lovely portrait of Brutus's wife Porcia, and a marriage that is a loving partnership and friendship, not just a useful front for a gay man. Along with the historical characters, there's original character Tiresius, a teenage runaway taken on by Brutus as a horseboy. Tiresius has secrets to hide, but as Brutus discovers more about the boy's troubled relationship with his father, it provides him with insight into his own troubled relationship with Caesar, a man who may or may not be his biological father. The interactions between the characters create a rich portrait of a situation where there is no easy right and wrong.

One of the problems with writing historical fiction is that historical people could have very different moral values and beliefs, often ones that don't sit well with a modern reader. In trying to make a lead character synpathetic, it's easy to slip into the trap of turning him or her into a twenty-first century person in fancy dress. This book does a superb job of presenting the characters in their proper context, with believable explanations for their attitudes and beliefs about various issues.

It's not a romance, because it follows Marcus Brutus and his relationships with Cassius and others in the months leading up to the assassination of Julius Caesar, and anyone who's familiar with either the history or Shakespeare's play will know that Things Do Not End Well for the conspirators. But well researched as far as I can tell, beautifully written, and I'd recommend it to someone looking for historical fiction with an LGBT theme.

Interesting take on a familiar event
By Anne M. Kleinginna
Sam Starbuck is an excellent writer with a sensitive touch toward LBGT issues. In this novelette, Brutus and Cassius are lovers faced with Julius Caesar's growing threat to the authority of the Roman Senate. Cassius pushes for his assassination, while Brutus is reluctant to commit murder, even in the interest of Rome. We all know how it ends, but the real story here is the well-told account of the conflict Brutus experiences, and his anguished realization that Caesar must die.

An added complication is the growing relationship between Brutus and his loyal and loving transgendered young servant boy Teresias, who has his own complexities to handle.

Overall, the story is more political than sexual, and the encounters are not described in an overly graphic way, but people who are offended by gay relationships will not enjoy this. I did.

Euclidean Geometry: A Guided Inquiry Approach (MSRI Mathematical Circles Library), by David M. Clark

Geometry has been an essential element in the study of mathematics since antiquity. Traditionally, we have also learned formal reasoning by studying Euclidean geometry. In this book, David Clark develops a modern axiomatic approach to this ancient subject, both in content and presentation. Mathematically, Clark has chosen a new set of axioms that draw on a modern understanding of set theory and logic, the real number continuum and measure theory, none of which were available in Euclid's time. The result is a development of the standard content of Euclidean geometry with the mathematical precision of Hilbert's foundations of geometry. In particular, the book covers all the topics listed in the Common Core State Standards for high school synthetic geometry. The presentation uses a guided inquiry, active learning pedagogy. Students benefit from the axiomatic development because they themselves solve the problems and prove the theorems with the instructor serving as a guide and mentor. Students are thereby empowered with the knowledge that they can solve problems on their own without reference to authority. This book, written for an undergraduate axiomatic geometry course, is particularly well suited for future secondary school teachers. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession.

Review
An interesting and singular approach of the Euclidean geometry is contained in this book . . . [The] book covers all the topics listed in the common core state standards for high school synthetic geometry . . . [T]he didactical approach of the large collection of problems, solutions and geometrical constructions is very important to consider it as a good textbook for teaching and learning synthetic geometry. --Mauro Garcia Pupo, Zentralblatt MATH

This is the third book for which I use the same title in my review. The other two are: Geometry: A Guide for Teachers (MSRI Mathematical Circles Library) and Integers, Fractions and Arithmetic: A Guide for Teachers (MSRI Mathematical Circles Library). As I wrote in one of these reviews, AMS and MSRI could have started another series (say Teacher's Mathematical Training Library or Inquiry-Based Learning Library) and place the three books there. None of these books is directly related to mathematical competitions except from the fact that they are written on topics included in the curriculum of all mathematical competitions. But then, there are thousands of books which fulfill this criterion.

Overall, I like this book better than Geometry: A Guide for Teachers (MSRI Mathematical Circles Library). I am less negative and, if it was not for its wrong placement in the wrong series, I would probably had given it a higher rating despite some problems as I explain below.

Assuming some primary notions and some definitions (which are not always stated) and using 10 axioms motivated by measure theory, the author `derives' many of the results of Euclidean geometry without the `painful' methods of synthetic geometry. (For those not familiar with Euclidean geometry, these axioms are neither Euclid's nor Hilbert's improved axioms.) The approach is interesting and worth knowing but, for those of us who have studied synthetic geometry, it eliminates a lot of the appeal and `magic' of synthetic geometry. It also minimizes the extend of how much someone can be trained in proofs and reduces the opportunity to help someone build deductive reasoning, two of the most important benefits of synthetic geometry. Fortunately, these benefits are not completely absent since the approach is still kind of synthetic. However, the author provides no proofs to the theorems and propositions, expecting the reader to discover all of them by himself/herself. This is a little extreme for a reader who has never seen geometry and, hence, he/she must study the book under the supervision of an experienced person. In this regard, I will be a little harsh to the author: `Inquiry-based' does not mean `Discover everything on your own.' If that was the case, no math book would have any proof claiming to be helping the reader to discover mathematics by inquiry. Inquiry-based learning means discovery through experimentation and try-and-error activities; kind the same way geometry was discovered by the Babylonians and Egyptians in the first place and eventually was formulated by the Greeks as a logical framework. No such activities are given. Therefore, I would argue that this book is not an inquiry-based book but just learn-on-your-own-if-you-can one.

The author has included three appendices. The first collects the axioms used in the book which are otherwise scattered in the various chapters. The third appendix summarizes Hilbert's axioms. Amazingly, the author separates these two appendices with an appendix entitled "Guidelines for the instructor". This fact makes one wonder how much the author cared about the logical order of the topics!

In any case, my conclusion is that although this is not the book to use to get training for mathematical competitions and although some improvements can be made in a second edition, it can prove useful to students who do not want to spend numerous hours to study synthetic Euclidean geometry using Hilbert's axioms. Or it can just be used as a quick reference book that contains a list of the most important theorems and propositions.

An intellectually dishonest book
By Michael Weiss
This is a truly terrible book. Things start off badly in the preface, when Clark claims that Euclid "asked his readers to experimentally verify [the axioms] as thoroughly as they were able". Euclid says no such thing. Anyone who knows beans about ancient Greek mathematics and philosophy will appreciate the sheer historical wrongness of this assertion. (Hint: Platonism.) Statements about the curvature of space are equally incorrect.

But the central problem with this book is its shoddy treatment of the axiomatic method. In some ways, Euclidean geometry is hard soil for the axiomatic approach: Euclid falls well short of modern standards of rigor, mainly because of the lack of so-called betweenness axioms. Hilbert of course (and others) showed how to remedy this early in the 20th century.

There are two intellectually honest ways to deal with this. You can bite the bullet, include the axioms, and go through the tedious steps of verifying things that seem intuitively clear (or insist that your students do the same). You tell your students, hey, I know it gets boring, but that's just how it goes sometimes. That's the price of rigor.

Or you don't claim total rigor. You tell your audience that it's just too painful to prove all the visually obvious statements about betweenness. You will (or they should) just assume them. Of course there are pitfalls with this approach, but it can work.

I should also mention hybrid approaches. You could do one or two proofs with full rigor, but then adopt more relaxed standards. You could illustrate full rigor with a toy axiom system, say just the basic incidence axioms. Whatever you do, though, you should not pretend you're being rigorous when you're not.

The author's approach: he introduces the "foundational principle" that properties of betweenness that "hold for all points and lines in the coordinate plane hold here as well."

Problem is, how does one know that something holds in the coordinate plane? Actually PROVING this almost always involves messy algebra, as bad as the tedious steps one faces with the rigorous axiomatic approach.

Clark doesn't expect the student to give any such algebraic verifications, nor does he do so himself in his sample proofs. He gives not even a hint of what the algebraic verifications would look like. The words "foundational principle" are employed like magic fairy dust: instead of saying, "this is visually obvious, so we'll assume it", the student is supposed to say, "this holds in the coordinate plane, so it holds by the foundational principle". The book seems to claim this amounts to a huge improvement, far more faithful to the spirit of the axiomatic method.
